A mother grieves for her missing son as family members of those abducted or reported missing in 2006 staged a protest campaign opposite the Colombo Fort railway station yesterday urging the authorities to locate them.
The Civil Monitoring Committee charges that the level of abductions continues despite repeated Government assurances and concerns raised by the international community including human rights groups.
Group Chairman Sirithunga Jayasooriya and members Mano Ganesan MP, Vasudeva Nanayakara MMC and Wickremabahu Karunaratne met IGP Victor Perera on Tuesday evening at Police Headquarters and expressed their strong protest over the never ending incidents, the organization said in a statement.
According to statistics from the Civil Monitoring Committee there were 54 abductions in Colombo, the majority being Tamils, of whom 36 are missing, 9 killed and 9 released after alleged payment of ransom.
The latest abduction was that of Marimuthu Sivamani (55) on Monday. A shop owner in Slave Island Mr. Sivamani went home for lunch in Kotahena that day and left home again for his shop that evening but had not returned home since then.
Meanwhile on Saturday 24-year-old Miss Priya, a resident of Crow Island, Colombo North, who left home to attend morning prayers at Sri Venkadeshvara Temple in Modera was seen by eye witnesses leaving the temple but did not return home. A complaint has been made at the Modera police station.
Also on Saturday Sathivel Thyagaraja (25) had left home in his vehicle that afternoon but did not return home. The vehicle in which he travelled was found abandoned on a side road in Peliyagoda on Monday evening. A complaint has been made at the Grandpass police station.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission, another private group, has said at least 400 Tamil youth have gone missing from Tamil-majority northern Jaffna peninsula since December.

These disappearances are definitely carried out by the security services with the help of the paramilitaries and the full support of Gothabhaya Rajapakse. He is the criminal mastermind behind it. He has been giving false information to the press and the HR organisations.
It is unbelievable that the abductions are taking place under such tight security during daylight hours. This is impossible withour security services connivance. |

Nothing to see here, just the 'majority of Tamils living happily in the South' enjoying their lives at the mercy of the Sinhala government... move along move along.

I too share the grievances of those suffering parents, and i would like to take this opportunity to say to all the tamil speaking people,,,,,,,,,,,,,
please do not put up with it, FIGHT WITH THE CRIMINAL SINHALESE, IF NEED TO JOIN LTTE, JOIN AND KILL THEM.
if 'WE TAMILS' are not safe in the so called sinhala capital , you are not safe in any part of the island just like TCK said. Edited By - tigeress19 - 1 Nov 2006 23:14:26 GMT |

Tamils are not safe anywhere there is a tamil majority. These things do not happen in parts of the country where there is a sinhalese majority.
Earlier a Karuna group heavy waight was apprehended for the abductions. The abductors are tamils and for ransoms among other reasons.
This is an internal problem among the scmbug tamil race. Stop blaming the rest of the Sri Lankans.
Police can do nothing unless the tamils are willing to cooperate in the investigations by giving information. |
