Holidayair,

You have to learn a little about doing business in Sri Lanka.

When the President himself is involved in the new airline and its fully owned by the GOSL, CAA would only be a rubber stamp. Don't count on it too much.

I hear they are planning to commence operations on the 4th of February '07, the day Ceylon got its independance from the British!

Dear Aviator,
I am not arguing against whatever you are saying.
My message was an answer to Holidayair about CAA approvals. Perhaps my message was not very clear.
Please read them together once again:

Holidayair:
The fact that Mihin Lanka are still 'developing a business proposal and submitting an application to the CAA' is a clear indication of just how far they have yet to go, irrespective of 'who' and 'how much' they have sitting behind them..

Now recall my earlier messages:
#1
This is the most urgent need for Sri Lanka now!

We have so much money and the poor people are iching to travel abroad...

The only problem is there are not enough flights to travel...

They need a budget airline!

So the Chintanaya comes up with a brilliant idea...

If JR can start an airline Air Lanka, I can start an airline under my name!!

This is the biggest joke of the MR Presidency!!

Man of the poor people!!
#2
Nobody is taking Mahinda for a ride!

They all together are taking the Tax payers for a ride!!

Magey amme!!

Now you would know what I think about this new airline.
Yes, it is a waste of taxpayers money.
I agree that we have to rescue our national carrier from the Whites.

You are absolutely right that Mihin Lanka has a clear advantage over US in terms of 'cutting through the red tape', however my comments were more to do with the actual WORK and TEAMS nessecary to successfully launch an airline 'startup' operation from scratch! The AOC (Air Operator Certification) process alone is complex to say the very least and must be stringently adhered to for ANY airline to be approved for INTERNATIONAL flights.. My point being that the chances for Mihin Lanka launching in FEB 2007 (let alone before US!)is somewhere between SLIM and NONE, and I believe that SLIM has left the building! ;)

However it is interesting to note that an executive Officer working for Mihin Lanka is the very same individual who was brought in by the CAA to examine OUR business proposal!...which he barely understood as he was more concerned with listening to the sound of his own voice!... to the extent that when HE expressed an interest in joining US we politely refused him...on the spot!

Needless to say that our eyes are WIDE OPEN and we have EXTREMELY RELIABLE sources telling us everything we need to know about Mihin Lanka...which is currently not much at all!

As before.. we wish them all the luck that they will need!

Guys... I've attended a marketing workshop early this year and Srilankan Airlines was one of the cases we had to work on. Having spoken to Chandana...the Corp.Comm. guy... Srilankan airlines is barely afloat...
The competition from cheaper airlines have hit them hard...especially the airlines operating from the middleeast since their supposed to be getting fuel also for cheaper prices...
This budget airlines idea was presented by us during that workshop plus the idea to re-launch the airlines on independence day...
We felt that srilankan was not taking care of it's own people us srilankans properly :) So we wanted people to be proud of their national carrier...
But this whole Mihin scene is just unbeleivable...
Why the hell does this guy wants to stamp his name on everything...first it was the national policy and now the national budget carrier...
Names and stuff should be decide on after proper research etc and not by some politico...
This is what happens when people get a dog and then bark themselves :) Politicians should leave these kinda stuff people who are experts in the field...

Its a good idea to start an Air Line specially budget airline. Because Sri Lankan airline is the only direct operator to UK at the moment and its half Emirates. So as a sri lankan we need our own airline but not another CTB or CGR.

By the time MR.J.R Jayawardhana started Airlanka everybody said the something. So will wait and see...So I think its a GOOD IDEA !!

Good idea, a budget airline like the budget SLTB buses. So we will see standing passengers and foot board passengers on Mihin Air!

I am admittedly new to this, but I am very disappointed to the posters running down Mahinda?s plan for a new low cost airline. Most of the posters critical of this
idea, are the very same people who have been blindly supporting a poster, who if we had believed his claims would be on his 6th month of operations.

Having done a search on the web, all I see is one press release after another from this individual being repeated in other websites without any independent confirmation. . This person accused a respected public servant of offering easy access to government approval in exchange for job and when confronted by Kulakottan, fudged his response by saying he did not mean ?that person? and modified his post. . Now we hear that this so called airline is not in operation because ?one cannot find? qualified staff. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Having googled for Holiday Air of Kenya, I am unable to find any reference to that airline which is supposed to be one of the largest in Kenya. Even the website has very little information other than some feel good statements and the sophistication of an A-Level Student.

The posters here have been very generous and supportive of this individual despite his lack of ability to deliver on his promises. I wish the best of luck to him and admire his optimism.

I hope you would be at least one tenth supportive of this new government sponsored airline for the masses without ridiculing it of hand.

UPDATE!

MIHIN LANKA GROUNDED
The Aviation Ministry has decided that the approvals for the launch of the Mihin Lanka budget airline will have to take its normal course resulting in the airline unlikely to get off the ground as scheduled on February 4.

The Chief Executive of the controversial airline Sajin Vaas Gunawardne had earlier announced the new airline will start operations on February 4.

The cabinet ministers gave approval for the new airline the previous week without seeing the cabinet paper or knowing its contents. According to the cabinet paper the airline is to be funded by monies from the ETF and the Foreign Employment Bureau (FEB).

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday told The Sunday Leader the UNP will oppose using ETF and FEB monies to fund the airline and added the government will have to seek parlimentary approval to allocate such funds.

The Sunday Leader learns the decision to follow normal procedure to grant the necessary approvals to get the airline off the ground was taken following a meeting at Temple Trees on Friday presided by President Mahinda Rajapakse. Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Aviation Secretary Tilak Collure, Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapakse, Director General Civil Aviation C. Nimalsiri and Vaas Gunawardene were among those present at the meeting.

The president had said at the meeting no room should be left to sabotage the launch of the airline and had criticised the service provided by SriLankan when he travelled. The President had told Nimalsiri little attention to detail was paid when he travelled.

Nimalsiri it is learnt had told the President there was little he could do since the travel plans were never notified to him.

However the Director General had explained the lengthy procedure invo;ved in granting the nesessary approvals for the new airline and added that they cannot be completed before February 4.

Following the representations made it was decided to follow the normal procedure which would effectively delay the scheduled launch of Mihin Lanka on February 4.
