Sansare,
Can we see any government of the world, sit to talk with a terrorist group, after they killed over 115 government solders, just a week earlier.
A valid point there. No government can give into any form terrorism in any circumstance unless disarmament comes to the equation. That is why forming UNP/SLFP coalition does not have any benefit as far as the valid result is concerned. Both parties in favour of keeping the Norwegians who are clearly and conspicuously assisting the terrorists for other hidden agendas. How on earth such country can be used for a fair reflection? I am eternally baffled.
Historically SL have made mistakes after mistakes on political mileage and this is yet another damp squib.
We are leading blind into blind.
The moment we start talking about peace then the terrorists start talking about conditions. What conditions are there to talk on which circumstances? This is highly ludicrous.
Its is quite apparent being market friendly the government cannot afford to get sanctioned by the donor countries hence thise useless/meaningless talks just to please the colonial masters. Nothing else. We are still digging the same grave not an inch moved forward. I feel sorry for those who believe positive outcomes in this type of kibosh. The only truth is to realise that terrorism depends on terrorism not by peace talks, so we should realise and act on that.
Mahabala,
Kumari, nice to see you are still in the fighting justifiable stance as a Lankan. Keep up the good work dear. The justice should precede one day.
God bless

This round of talks became a reality mainly because of the pressure from the international forces. The warring parties were a world apart and were not at all ready for talks.
International forces had to exert more pressure to the government to push it for peace talks. Sri Lanka government was growing out of control to the global capitalists during the past period in many aspects. It fought for the economic independence from the neo-liberalism through measures to strengthen the national economy. But their efforts had no scientific base and the mere nationalism could bring none other than extreme misery to the people.
Deviating people's attention from real problems by promoting Sinhala chauvinism is the only survival measure available to the government. For that the government has to fight a disastrous war with the LTTE that causes further havoc to the country. Sri Lanka has been stuck in this vicious circle for decades without a way forward.
Mahinda Rajapakse regime however was able to reassure the Sinhala chauvinist masses that the war can be won, at least in the first phase of the Ealam War-IV that began last August. However the government's victories of two and half months over the LTTE were turned upside down within few days by the Tigers as they defeated the Sri Lanka Army offensive to capture Elephant Pass and after that proved that it could fight the war all over the island if government needed it.
Global capitalists that were tolerating the ceasefire violations and the offensives of the government against LTTE had to be stern to save the Sri Lanka government from falling in further difficulty in the war with the Tigers. Yet they had to take several tough actions to take the government to their control.
In one hand they began to question the extremely bad human rights record of the Sri Lanka government. In a report presented to the UN General Assembly Monday, a special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions will ask the UN Secretariat to establish a full-fledged international human rights monitoring mission in Sri Lanka.
Earlier this month, the Government only just managed to stop a European Union resolution from being passed at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The European Commission has now come in favour of a high-level international experts group being sent to review the human rights situation in Sri Lanka. The initiative is being taken by the Tokyo donor conference co-chair countries - the United States, the European Union Japan and Norway.
Main capitalist countries including US that are crucial to the tourism market of Sri Lanka have issued travel warnings to their citizens travelling to the island. It is a big blow to the country's economy and also a fulfilment of the goal of the LTTE's Galle Naval camp attack. US even indefinitely postponed the joint naval exercises planned to be held at the end of this month.
On the other hand the global capitalists forced the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United National Party to come to a consensus. The MOU signed between the two rival parties covers four major grounds, conflict in the north and east, electoral reforms, good governance and social development, in a two years time.
Country's economy is in a tense situation with balance of payment crisis and the inability to rein the skyrocketing cost of living. It is not in a position to allow the government to wage a war of a disastrous nature. That is also one major reason that pushes the government to the negotiation table.
But the Sinhala chauvinist forces that have been unleashed by the government in military and political structures cannot be easily collared. In a recent judgment given by Sri Lanka's Supreme Court, the merger of the Northern and Eastern provinces that came under the 1987 Indo-Lanka Peace Accord was challenged. The judgement was criticised by international forces including India. It pushed the country several decades back with regard to the ethnic problem and embarrassed the government as well.
Tamil National Alliance MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam in an interview in Sunday Leader said, 'If you look at the judgment of the Supreme Court, it seems to hold the view that the merger is invalid due to a technicality, which is the process, through which the merger was brought about. The Supreme Court has held this legally unacceptable. It has also suggested a correct way, in which the merger could have been brought about.'
He further said, 'A referendum could be certainly held. If you look at the 13th Amendment and the Provincial Councils Act, under which the merger took place, it provides for a referendum provided that normalcy returns to the northeast. It is due to the sheer absence of normalcy that more than a million Tamil citizens from the northeast have been displaced, either internally or fled the country.
'A referendum is to determine the future of the status of the northeast as a single unit. It should take place only after they all return. So that?s why it has been postponed.
'We believe that till such time that there is clear agreement and a commitment made by the Sri Lankan state and till such time normalcy returns, the merger should remain as it is.'
After all, the warring parties have come to the negotiating table. It is a negotiating table totally controlled by the international forces. The parties will not have much chance to work on their own. Both parties will be pressed to come to a settlement, a settlement the global capitalist think fit enough to keep the stability of the capitalist system of Sri Lanka.
One good point in this endeavour is the seemingly equal status of the parties before the international community despite both are considered equal rogues.
All in all, we hail the international community's apparent stance on the Tamil's legitimate right to self rule. That is the base for the solution. Edited By - Ruchira - 25 Oct 2006 13:54:19 GMT |

The major humanitarian issue right now is that A9 is closed.
LTTE loses income and they can not pay salaries in foreign exchange.
GOSL does not send food and gasoline via Wanni, so LTTE can not steal the shipment. |

Before talks, the premier steps are needed!
Send medicine and food for the afflicted n/e people without ceasing.
Make transport facilities.
make steps to return the displaced people to their residences.
let the children go to schools.
Make a path Gosl officials (no SLA) in n/e to carry out their works without military influence.
Make sure protection of all civilians.
Stop innocents killings and political killings.
next come to political solution.( both sides concerned) |

Sansare,
Your posts are not matching with your member name...lol. So, very happy to see your name there.
I get a nice rise smile for that :)
Yes, my friends used to call me Pachaya when I was in the office back in the 70s. I use to make white lies on April fool's day and that is why I chose that. Its all for fun.
I appreciate your valuable contribution to the forum. Nobody wants killing and fighting and all that. But there is no way that killings and fightings be stopped by giving into such terror force. Those who fight in the name of tamil freedom are in fact disguised CIA strategies to disrupt our country.
Terrorism has no eyes, it depends on blood and flesh, it doesn't have feelings for Tamils, sinhalese, muslims or burghers. But only for their prevalence. This is what we must realise. The policticians such as CBK, RW and now MR are trying to appease in the name of peace. WHich is wasting time. I had a sneaky feeling when Mahinda was elected this would happen in order to appease IC and the business community in our country such measure would take precedence. Now I am proven right.
Being a Catholic married to a Sinhalese Buddhist lady I have learnt my fair share on how it works in SL. Majority fail to realise that there is a burning issue. They just clamour for daily needs, and this is exactly what Mahinda is responding for. The fact of the matter is we are unable to launch a full scale military onslaught against the terrorism due to many economic sanctions that may incur by the donor nations. This is the reality.
Countries like Cuba withstood the pressure exerted by the Americans due to the help from USSR in the 1980s. But for us we are too dependent on open economy and Capitalist economies, this is why we cannot get out of this big quagmire. The start of 1977 was a disguised mistake son. People were duped for the open economy. The value of the currecy had plummetted all time low. Even Rs 2000 note is printed. All this add to the pressure we have, so peace talks (bogus) had to be a show piece for the daily survival.
Its a sad plight but as we know Sri lankans have to put up with bogus political shows. That is just the part and parcel of our lives.
God Bless!!

Another humanitarian issue is GOSL should allow LTTE to import weapons for their security.
GOSL should give tsunami funds to build more suicide boats and building materials to build bunkers in GOSL areas. |
