The government will be addressing the core issues with a new approach

is this another distraction? to gloss over the main issues that is extra-judicial killings, SLAF bombings, curfews, paramilitary and SLA atrocities, lack of shelter, lack of food, humanitarian crisis.
Here's hoping for a peaceful resolution to this catastrophe not just in words but in deeds as well.

LG bro,

No, addressing the core issue is a 'must'. When, LTTE gets some sort of confidence about government, other unfortunate daily issues will decrease.

We know, all these killing started after LTTE took arms for those core issue. Those issues are the prime reason.

Sansare mate

I disagree about when the killings started but we can argue like there's no tomorrow. To gain confidence and mutual trust there must be acknowledgment of wrong doings of the immediate past (I'm not saying we should forget about the genuine grievances since Independence).
But getting over the present hurdles will make the core issues easier to negotiate and provide a conducive environment.

ANUD,
are the TNA members dummies who can not do anything

You rejoiced when GOSL stopped food supplies and convoys to Tamils in the North, what right have you got to question what TNA or LTTE does? It is a matter for them and Tamils.

Why don't you mind your b business, that is get obsessed and drowned in hatredness?

GOSL is concerned with the welfare of all its peoples .. and that includes the Tamils, Muslims and any other ethnicites as there may be.

If it was only the LTTE that we were dealing with, it may not be too difficult to arrive at a solution. What we have in reality is a rich country in Europe (Norway), having taken a decision to get involved in 'our problem' to suit its own purposes ('corner' oil/gas resources in this region) .. and consequently, is now working with the LTTE as 'collaborator' - to achieve a common objective - which is none other than 'separation' of the NE, as a bloc from Sri Lanka.

Cupidity and foolishness on the part of earlier leaders of SL has brought us to this 'pass'. Because of the power and prestige that Norway enjoys in Europe, the present Govt of Sri Lanka while perhaps aware of its un-suitability for the 'facilitator' role, has yet done nothing very much to publicise its 'under-hand' dealings with the LTTE .. and the 'God-father' like role it has assumed vis-a-vis the LTTE.

As I see it, GOSL will have to take that necessary step, soon - to denounce the role Norway has taken to 'side' with the LTTE, while trying to show the world (and the UN), that it has a 'clean pair of hands' - in the facilitator role, it has assumed.

Sri Lanka does not 'have the clout' to fight this out in international fora, and get rid of Norway - they are in here for their own purposes (not humanitarian concerns, you may be sure), and as far as I can see are determined to stay the course. We'd have to join with - ally ourselves with - other powerful countries, like UK, USA etc., to counter the subtle challenge being made by Norway to our sovereignity.

In fact, I wonder whether the recent 'understanding' arrived between the SLFP and the UNP is an indication of their appreciation, that letting the JVP to 'creep in' and entrench itself as an indispensable partner with the ruling party would be disastrous in terms of pursuing a policy as out-lined .. of improving our international image, and forge those necessary connections with the UK, USA, Japan .. and other countries, before 'taking on Norway' .. to denounce their in-sincerity, and have them removed from the 'dominating position' they have been able to achieve in determining an eventual 'settlement' in Sri Lanka.
(The MoU betweeen the SLFP, and the UNP bodes well for the future of Sri Lanka and all its peoples).

I think now Sri Lanka is going in the correct direction. Both main political parties are together. World can't say government is dancing according to the Marxists.

Government should not allow terrorists to avoid the core issues that reflect the genuine grievances of the people. We have talked enough about ceasefire, creating normalcy, Building confidence etc for the past four years without any results being produced. Nominal ceasefire has survived despite thousands of violations. So it is the time for Government negotiators to stick in to the real business. Norway should not be allowed to high jack negotiations to rescue terrorists. GOSL should be able to show the world whether terrorists really want to find solutions for problem of the people they claim to represent.
