President Mahinda Rajapakse during the last presidential election presented the people of the country with his policy statement, the Mahinda Chinthana, which brought together the thinking of all those who supported his candidature.
Mahinda Chinthana was the work of the likes of Wimal Weerawansa, Dullas Alahapperuma, Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thero and Mangala Samaraweera. Hence it essentially included the salient features of socialist thinking.
But close to one year after presenting the country with the Mahinda Chinthana, Rajapakse is today gradually distancing himself from it.
During the run up to last year's presidential election, Weerawansa likened Rajapakse to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has opposed US intervention.
'Vote for Mahinda Rajapakse without any fear. You will then create an Asian Chavez. If Ranil Wickremesinghe gains power, he would be a puppet of the US government. If Rajapakse come to power, he will stand firm against the US, be another Chavez,' Weerawansa said on the election platform.
Asian Chavez
Rajapakse from then on was looked at as the Asian Chavez.
However, during Rajapakse's visit to New York to address the UN General Assembly, he was given the chance to make his speech before Chavez.
Most leaders who were aware that Chavez was planning to make a controversial speech were seated and eagerly waiting to hear it and as a result also had to listen to Rajapakse's speech.
Chavez, who spoke soon after Rajapakse, attacked the US and then in a surprise move, praised Rajapakse who spoke before him.
The words of praise expressed by Chavez had a hidden agenda, which many did not see at the time.
Venezuela is contesting against the US backed Guatamala to gain non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council. It now transpires this was the motive behind Chavez's words of praise.
Venezuela and Guatamala were carrying out a hidden campaign with the state leaders present at the general assembly to garner their support.
Support assured
Chavez was under the impression that Sri Lanka would support his country's candidature and it pushed him to praise Rajapakse at the general assembly. Rajapakse had agreed to vote in favour of Venezuela. However, the Sri Lankan representative had voted in favour of the US backed Guatamala.
It has now been revealed that it was a closely monitored move. A fact that the JVP's Somawansa Amarasinghe and Wimal Weerawansa are unaware of is that three key figures of the Rajapakse administration - Basil Rajapakse, Gotabhaya Rajapakse and Dulles Alahapperuma - are half American.
The two Rajapakses are actually US citizens. Alahapperuma was also residing in the US before he arrived in the island to spearhead the presidential election campaign for Rajapakse.
These three individuals play a key role in running the government.
In the words of the JVP, the government is today run by those loyal to the US.
Although the President promised to vote in favour of Venezuela to Chavez, he could not keep his word due to the pressure exerted by the US.
