KULA(n)
Emperor Asoka was not known as 'Devanampiya Asoka'; he was known as 'Devanapriya Asoka'.
From Wikipedia:
Imperial title: Devanampiya Piyadassi
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashoka_the_Great
Prof Mendis Rohanadeera says;
..whereas Asoka in his numerous edicts being mentioned as Devanampiya, Piyadasi Raja.

Kula, the question is not whether it is 'Devanampiya' or 'Devanapriya'.
The question is, how LULA transformed it into 'Theva Nambiya Theesan'!
Devanampiya Tissa controversy started due to the fact that even Mahavamsa says 'DevAnampiya Tissa' and not 'DevAnapiya or DevAnapriya' Tissa.
So, this controversy resulted 'Tissa' to become 'Theesan' in the end? ;-)
Kula, LULA already said that he invented this to assist TAMIL PRONUNCIATION. :-) Edited By - GamaRaala - 1 Dec 2006 06:22:42 GMT |

LULA,
I am sure he has enough to say and then repeat the same 101 times.
When you take off your 'clothes', we do not have to do anything extra. ;-)
After all, unlike you, the readers are not DESCENDANTS of Konde bendapu Javanese :-)
Thevanabiya Theesan 307-267 BC was the second Son of King Muta Sivan and brother of king Maha Sivan. He was a friend of King Asokan.
....
Now, as usual, I am hoping our clown, ModaRaala to jump up and down in joy. I am sure he has enough to say and then repeat the same 101 times.
Lula, ModaRaala is not CRUEL to repeatedly humiliate a Lula who has become mentally deranged for not being able to substantiate his 'Theva Nambiya Theesan'. :-) Edited By - GamaRaala - 1 Dec 2006 06:31:39 GMT |

Gamarala,
Do not take Wikepedia as a reliable source as it can be edited by anyone.
Some of the Buddhist Scholars like Dr.(Ven) Rahula Walpola Thero ( I have to double check for correct name), have identified the name as 'DevnApriya' in Prakrit that was changed as 'DevAnapiya' in Pali.

Kula,

I do not take Wikepedia as the authoritative source. I quoted it for you to see that 'Devanampiya' is not merely my invention, unlike LULA. Besides, Prof M Rohanadeera's article has 'Devanampiya'. So, we can say both of them are backed by historical sources.
Whether it is 'Devanampiya' or 'Devanapriya' is not the problem.
The problem is, how it became 'Theva Nambiya'.
Besides, 'Tissa' has become 'Theesan'! :-)
Only LULA knows whether Asoka become 'Asokan'!! |

Gamarala,
Even though it is not a critical issue for us to argue, I would rather stand by what Dr. (Ven) Rahula has said quoting Prakrit sources which I will provide when I get them. I can remember reading a quotation from Prakrit sources in his book 'History of Buddhism in Sri Lanka'.
I doubt whether Prof. Rohandeera had any historical backing to his claim.

If you stand by Dr. (Ven) Rahula, I guess you do not stand by LULA's 'Theva Nambiya' and 'Theesan' :-) |

Gamarala,
My reference was to Emperor Asoka and that has nothing to do with what Lula said about DevAnambiya Tissa.
Good try!!
I have a lot of grey hair! |
