There is nothing wrong with Buddhism but only with Sinhala-Buddhism as we know it. Dalai Lama is a well known Buddhist many in the world follow him and his type of Buddhism.
Sinhala-Buddhism does not rise above kindekarten ritualism as demonstrated by JHU members inside and outside Parliament.
JHU also wanted Ananthasangaree to join them as their MP but rare wiser counsel prevailed. Edited By - Sintamus - 15 Oct 2006 20:38:57 GMT |

In India, the Dalits - once known as Untouchables (low caste) are converting to Buddhism because the Hindus are discriminated by caste system but Buddhism has no influence by caste system.
Even though Lord Buddha was born into a high caste Hindu royal family, he rejected the caste system.
Thank God, in India they are still following the true Buddhism where as in Sri Lanka, the Sinhala Buddhism still follows the Hindu caste system.
When a person is ordained into the Sinhala Buddhist order as a monk, they select a Nikaya for the newly ordained monk according to his caste.
The Maha Nayaka theros are all selected from the high caste. |

As the chief architect of India's constitution, he wrote anti-discrimination provisions and quota systems into the country's law.
They do serve well, those who educated themselves to be able to use the system of demcoracy intellectually. If these 'converts' are protesting against their aggressors and are resorting to religion, then their investment in religion has been mostly for material purposes. Equal Opportunity laws apply only AFTER merit basis for common principles and values has been exhausted. Don't blame the architect. Blame users who are not ready for democracy.

German aid freeze and Australian travel advisory-only such measures by more countries can bring some tangible results. Sri Lanka is a country that has swindled the international community of billions of dollars in the name of this conflict, made no efforts what so ever to stop the conflict and even blames all of the international community for the situation it is in now.
To force the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE to go for peace talks at the end of this month, Germany has frozen all new economic aid to Sri Lanka, according to The Sunday Times.
New commitment worth more than 38 million Euros meant for projects in government as well as Tamil areas, would remain frozen until the start of the peace process, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development said on Friday.
Already, several projects in the Tamil North East had been stopped because of security concerns and the listing of the LTTE as a terrorist organisation by the European Union (EU), said the German Minister for Economic Development, Mrs.Heidi Wieczorek-Zeul, in Frankfurt.
?As long as both sides engage in intensive conflict, it is not meaningful for the German government to commit additional funding that cannot reach the people of Sri Lanka . There cannot be military solution to the conflict between the Singhalese and the Tamils,? Minister Wieczorek-Zeul said.
Australian travel advisory
Meanwhile, the Australian government had issued a travel advisory asking Australians not to go to Colombo because of the possibility of being kidnapped.
The advisory, issued in August, had said that foreigners were being kidnapped, The Sunday Times reported.
Reacting to it, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the advisory was baseless as there had not been a single case of a foreigner being kidnapped in Sri Lanka in the last decade.
The matter would be taken up with Canberra soon, an official said.
Global bid to get talks started
The German aid freeze has coincided with a flurry of international activity to get the peace talks re-started.
The US Assistant Secretary of State, Richard Boucher, the Japanese Peace Envoy, Yasushi Akashi, and the Norwegian peace facilitator, Jon Hanssen Bauer, would be in the island from Monday onwards to kick start the suspended peace process and to see that the two sides go for talks on October 28 and 29 in Switzerland as planned.
Boucher would not be going to Kilinochchi to meet the LTTE?s political leader SP Tamilselvan, but Akashi and Hanssen Bauer would.
But despite international concern, fighting is still going on in the North and East.
The army said that in Muhamalai, on Saturday, the LTTE fired artillery and mortars on government troops and killed two men and injured 13.
The army replied in kind and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.
The LTTE had not reported the incident.

TIGRESS,
You are again speaking nonsense (as usual). I am not in a situation to give you detailed accounts (I am quite busy). But, it is good if you can spend some time to read about certain Jaffna Hindu Castes like Koviars, Nalluwas, Tanakaras etc (that cannot be found amongst your brethren across the straight). Don't be surprised if you come across the complete opposite of what you currently believe.
LULA,
My suggestion to you is very simple. If you do not know the breadth of the subject you are speaking, better refrain from that altogether.
There is a concern about the caste of a person in certain Nikyas of the Sri Lankan version of Buddhism (which in a way can be considered as something completely against the fundamentals of Buddhism), but it is not essentially the one you think, unfortunately.

yes mucha , those you mentioned are sinhalese imported from the south to the thamil eelam. having caste system in the community is only available in Hindu community.
are you trying to tell me the southerners too are Hindus in those days?(i would like to point out the pancha eeswaram temples)
coming to the point,
those castes you mentioned were brought by the Buddhist monks to the thamil eelam in the hope of converting the northerners to Buddhism and the monks succeeded partially. it must have took some time for the whole process and the new converts must have moved to south as it was the case that the Buddhists are in the south and the Hindus are in the north.
the ones who stayed behind are Tamil speaking new converts eventually gave up Buddhism or sinhala speaking Buddhist stayed behind eventually gave up Buddhism and sinhala language.
THE POINT HERE IS THE SINHALESE BECAME MAJORITY IN THE ISLAND BY CONVERTING THE PEOPLE WHO SUFFERED BY THE HINDU CASTE DISCRIMINATION.
thanks to ltte and VP that the horrible discriminating caste system do not exist in thamil eelam these days. Edited By - tigeress19 - 16 Oct 2006 09:32:21 GMT |

Tigress19,
I can respond you easily and the temptation is too much.
But that task is so easy that even somebody like Mucha-linda can respond you.
Why try driving the car myself when I can easily find a driver?
Let Mucha-linda respond you this time. I am sure he will, even if he is busy with his Christian west manager?s work. (When you pass him a bucket he is always ready to take a bath.) |

| I don't understand. What's the point of converting from one lower cast to another. These people should have the self confidence to be who ever they are. Now all Buddhists in India will be perceived to be lower cast convert and not followers of Lord Buddha. |

I have asked many Sinhalese, can a low caste Sinhala-Buddhist monk from 'that certain Nikaya' ever become a Nayaka Thero and the answer was 'Not at all possible'.
I may not know the 'breadth' of the subject but I have heard Nanda Malini singing about that 'certain Nikaya' and many Sinhala-Buddhists commenting on it. |
