Norwegian peace envoy Jon Hanssen Bauer will be here again next week to lay the groundwork for the resumption of peace talks between the Government and the LTTE on October 28 and 29 in Geneva.
This move was communicated to Government yesterday when senior minister and chief negotiator Nimal Siripala de Silva met Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar. Mr. Brattskar met the minister after holding talks with LTTE political wing leader S.P. Tamilselvan in Kilinochchi on Tuesday to get the approval of the LTTE for the talks in Geneva.
In response to the Tigers` threat to pull out of talks if the Government persists with military action, Minister de Silva reassured the ambassador the Government would never go on the offensive to scuttle negotiations.
However, Mr. de Silva who was also the Chief Negotiator during the previous round of Geneva talks said the Government would resort to defensive measures to repulse LTTE attacks.
?We are going for talks while retaining the right to take defensive action in the face of possible Tiger attacks. Otherwise, we will not even dream of launching attacks purposely to sabotage the peace move,? he said.Mr. Thamilselvan had told Mr. Brattskar in Kilinochchi that the LTTE would walk out of the peace dialogue if Government launches fresh offensives in the areas under its control.
Meanwhile, Special peace envoy Yasushi Akashi, will be paying his 13th visit to Sri Lanka when he arrives here on Sunday.
The Japanese Embassy announced yesterday that Mr. Akashi would be here on a five-day visit.
It said that considering the current situation in Sri Lanka where both the Government and the LTTE are making final preparations to hold direct talks on October 28 and 29. Mr. Akashi would meet Government officials and LTTE leaders.
