Shocking discovery at Welikada prison
Sunday, 8 October 2006 - 4:13 AM SL Time

Only one toilet for 100 mentally ill inmates

A visit by the Good Shepherd Congregation to the Welikada prison recently led to a shocking discovery ? there was only one toilet for the use of around 100 mentally disturbed inmates.

Inmates categorised as `dangerous` and confined to cells and those who posed no threat and were under treatment in open wards were all forced to queue up to use this solitary toilet within the premises, it was found.

`That`s right, there`s only one toilet for all these inmates`, Lakshman Silva, the Superintendent of the prison admitted. `There is no option right now but the problem is being sorted out`.

He said that six new toilets for these inmates will be constructed bythe prison`s Welfare Association. `We are now in the process of procuring the building materials for this purpose`. (SP)

`It will be resolved`, he assured.

Prison director and his superiors in the local administration responsible for the budget should be fired immediately. In a civilised country, even a prisoner deserves a minimum of respect and dignity. A real scandal.

Depriving these facilities is worse than the jail sentence.
Suppose one inmate takes atleast 5 minutes for their morning duties, for all of them this will take 500 minutes. i.e 8 hours. the last person have to be in a que for 8 hours. They all have to spend their life time waiting outside toilet.
The govt doesn't care abou their own singhala inmates.
Their thinking might be that - if we (SL) don't give food there wouldn't be a need to go to toilet and as a result there is no need for more than one toilet.
Govts come and go and never wanted to see/care these people's plight.

The fact is that these Officials at the Prison's Dept. had been fed on the Inmate's excreta. Thus saw NO NEED FOR THE BASIC AMENITIES. They have only seen the need to build a seperate quarters for all HIGH RANKING POLITICAL AND INFLUENTIAL CRIMINALS.

Why should there be the need for finances from the Prisons welfare association. Where did the govt. money go???

Who are the culprits??/

This aint good...what were they doing for soo long without complaining???or were they waiting for these mental inmates to make a petition and complain that they dont have proper place to do their thing...this is pathetic...
these mentally unstables might suffer and die of a burst tube or bloked something or a kidney problem instead of getting cured for their sicknesses in the open wards....
the persons conserned to these issues must be litigated...

We also sepnd a lot of money to feed the miserable 'eelam tamils' who would die of starvation otherwise. The stillborn and defunct-even-in-concept state of eelam is a burden that needs to be eliminated fast, so that the economy can continue unhindered.

Mr. Sandman, your money to the government does not go to feeding the Tamils, however they are going towards killing them. SO don't talk if you don't know anything

SO THAT WAS WHERE DR SUMANATHISSA GOT HIS LEAD FROM!

The answer is - cut your coat according to your cloth. Don't arrest criminals until you have enough toilet facilities to match world standards. We have en suites in our Australian prisons. But those who are considered mentally retarded are not allowed to operate the shower. It is controlled by central authorities.
