Mahinda`s military campaign `most efficient and prudent` - Premadasa`s Son Sajith
Monday, 2 October 2006 - 12:53 AM SL Time

Sajith Premadasa, son of assassinated President Ranasinghe Premadasa, has lauded President Mahinda Rajapakse`s handling of the campaign against terrorism saying it was `most efficient and prudent`, IANS reported yesterday.

Premadasa, who was in India on an 11-day visit, had also said he was keen keen to develop excellent ties with new Delhi.

The report said: The politician-son of Ranasinghe Premadasa, the Sri Lankan president who ordered Indian troops out of the island in 1989 sparking a diplomatic row, says he is keen to develop excellent ties with New Delhi.

In an interview before ending an 11-day visit to India, Sajith Premadasa of the opposition (UNP also credited President Mahinda Rajapakse with pursuing a military campaign against the Tamil Tigers that he said was seen widely as `most efficient and prudent`.

The 39-year-old MP chose words carefully when he was asked about his father`s demand made in 1989 asking Indian troops trying to disarm the LTTE in the island`s war-hit northeast to go home, saying Sri Lankans were capable of resolving their differences themselves.

The Premadasa administration also provided arms and ammunition to the LTTE to take on Indian soldiers, the last of whom left Sri Lanka in March 1990. Within months, the LTTE resumed an armed conflict that continues to this day, having claimed around 65,000 lives.

`I have done an authentic critique, a realistic critique of my father`s policies,`

Premadasa told IANS. `I have ascertained the pros and cons, its negatives and positives. And I have formulated my own vision. But since my father is no more, I do not intend criticizing his policies.`

He quickly added: `I have a great deal of passion and determination to surpass my father`s noble achievements in the domestic arena.

`But when it comes to external relations, generally with the international community, more specifically with our great neighbour India, my thoughts and my vision and my perception are totally and absolutely different. I shall work for a frank, direct, authentic and transparent relationship with India.

`There were substantial deficiencies in external relations, especially with bilateral relationship with India,` Premadasa said, referring to his father`s presidency which ended when an LTTE suicide bomber killed him at a 1993 May Day rally in Colombo. `I shall champion all such efforts to correct it.`

While making it clear that he was only articulating popular feeling in the Sinhalese-majority southern Sri Lanka, Premadasa explained why Colombo had the upper hand in the fighting against the Tamil Tigers.

`In terms of military strategy, it is perceived to be a success by a vast majority in Sri Lanka, particularly in the so-called south,` he said. `I also see a situation where the government has very efficiently and methodically utilized all available resources to conduct a military and diplomatic approach to the conflict...

`I see the government approach extremely popular. It is very well received. For the first time people are beginning to state that here is a government, unlike any other, using a military approach in the most efficient and prudent manner. This is the perception.`

He said incentives provided to security forces in the form of encouragement and quick promotions coupled with better weapons were `the distinct features of the present government`s military strategy`.

President Rajapakse, who took power in November defeating the UNP`s Ranil Wickremesinghe, is `quite popular`, Premadasa said.

`Right from inception he was very keen on achieving a settlement through the peace process. But for a variety of reasons, the process was scuttled. Ultimately these and other factors pushed him towards the warpath. Presently he is popular among the masses. I think he is quite popular among the masses.`

Rajapakse, he added, would not be `a one-term president but a two-term president`.

Premadasa, however, underlined the need for a political solution to the ethnic conflict.

`While military victories have given an upper hand (to the government), it is indispensable to have a political solution to this intractable issue. Many may claim that military strategy alone can achieve the objectives. I don`t subscribe to that.`

Well said Sajith and I agree with him. The moderate UNPers should pave the support to Mahinda irrespective of their political backing after all we need a communication method that makes sense with the terrorists.

Sajith is saying exactly what Mahinda does. Retaliation leading to peace talks which tigers cannot hoodwink the masses. This is the part and parcel from the JHU/JVP backing to Mahinda and he's getting popular among hardcore Sinhalese. As Sajith says we cannot get a military solution for this alone, while thwarting the terrorists we need a political soultion via power sharing, PCs, Federal or something of those lines to make sense for the tamil folks.

All racists Singhalese are getting together, hoping to annihilate the Tamils from Sri Lanka. I think they are underestimating the Tamils and the LTTE. As long as this Singhala racism and hatred for Tamils is alive and well among the Singhalese, Srilanka will be the failed and pathetic state in the world.

You may kill, bomb, loot and rape, but don't ever hope to live in peace until we, the Tamils have peace. If we are going down, then we will take you with us. Wait until next maveerar day for fire works to begin in the Singhala racist land.

The Singhalese are not doing any racial riots against the Tamils after 1983, because they fear retaliation from LTTE and bad reputation against the Singhala racist nation in the international arena. Other wise, the Singhala racists haven?t changed, they are still the same old Singhala racists, who would still throw Tamil children and women in the boiling Tar, if they can, like they did it in previous riots.

The Singhala racists are still more barbarians than the Rwandans, the circumstances have changed, hence they can?t do the same style riots anymore. But, now they are using their army to do the same atrocities against the Tamils.

Singhala racists are worse than the Hutus of Rwanda, at least they had racial riots only twice, but these Singhala hutus of Sri Lanka had numerous racial riots and ethnic cleansing long before the Rwandans.

I don't think Sinhalese are willing to go Tamil Nadu leaving their own country unless you want to go there.

Am I right in saying that?

Aund Soma Rama Veera Soora Thero,

I never thought you are such a novice when it comes to history of Sri Lanka. Even your own Mahavamsa says that you, the Singhala racists came to Sri Lanka in a dingy boat. Why don't you go back to La La land. I think the Singhala racists are still in La La land that's why they refused to accept the true history of Sri Lanka.

The Tamils are the ancient inhabitants of this island and not the thugs, who came in a dingy boat. If you deny this history, either you are lying or the Monk Mahanama was a drunken liar. Your Singhala Hero Dutta Gemunu's father told him not to go and grab Tamils' land, but he didn't listen. Will the Singhala aggression ever end?

The problem with the Singhala racists is that they pick and choose what suits their racist idea from Mahavamsa and hide the few truths in that fiction.

We Tamils are the part of the history of this island right from the beginning and we are not going anywhere, we will fight to defend our homeland from the Singhala racist aggressors. You should never dream of living in Yapapatuwa with peace. It will never happen in million years. ha ha ha ha!

Am I right saying that? ha ha ha ha LOL

Thivya:

I understand your suffering.

80 million people. According to you, first human beings (should be still primitive) to be evolved in Asia or to migrate to Asia. Yet, there is no their own country.

Why don't you all go to Antarctica, chase out Penguins and claim homeland.

Oh. that does not work. All the countries have established labs there.

ha....ha....ha... LOL.
