Siripala hits out at media
Tuesday, 24 January 2006 - 2:28 AM SL Time

Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva yesterday severely criticized all media in the country. He said the media was reporting incorrect stories about the Health sector. `The media is only highlighting the faults in the Health Ministry. We are not happy with this cheap behaviour of the media,` he said.

Addressing A symposium of the Elimination of Leprosy held at the BMICH, he said the media persons are happy to publish stories about faults of the Health sector. `Recently, there had been 35 dengue patients reported to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. The media gave wide publicity to it. Now we are reducing the dengue cases through Ministry`s Dengue Prevention Programme. It is a great achievement for the Ministry. But, they are not reporting about such achievements,` he said.

He said the media persons were only writing their views and not considering the scientific evidence available.

The BBC has considered Sri Lanka as model country for the prevention of Leprosy. It is very important for us. `We like the BBC to consider our other issues such as the peace process in that manner. Unfortunately, the BBC is promoting a bad image all over the world about our peace talks and ethnic problem. It is a bad habit of the media,` Minister de Silva said.

Mr. Siripala needs to stop acting like a child and demand compliments from the press! If the role of the media was to continuously compliment people and report good things alone, media companies would go bust! People thrive on hearing bad news, in a way its bad, in a way its good.

Especially for inefficient public services, criticisms and wide exposure for its faults its essential. If already corrupt and highly inefficient public servants and officials and ministers, started getting compliments from our media and civil society, where is the room for improvement?

Mr. Siripala has clearly given us a good example of the positive effect of such criticism, where the media highlighted the 35 dengue patients at Karapitiya Teaching hospital,, which led to the Ministry's Dengue Prevention Programme, which led to reduction of dengue cases! That's a great thing! But just imagine if there was no media to highlight this - Mr. Siripala would have done nothing! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even hear about the dengue problems in Karapitiya! On the other hand, if the media started informing that dengue patients were declining, our ministries and public servants would see it as 'case closed' and return back to inefficiencies.

The aim of the media should be to hold those in public office accountable to the citizens that put them in office and pay their salaries. In order to ensure that citizens of this country get an efficient, corrupt free public service and government. It is therefore, a duty of the media to continuously expose to us the discrepancies in our public service and servants so that they have as an aim, a goal of continuous improvement.

So stop complaining and start working! And stop shouting at the media because you are not happy they are not too nice to you. Growing up at this stage would sorta help.

The interesting fact is that Mr.De Silva does not allege that what the media has highlighted is inaccurate. His allegation is that it's only the bad that is highlighted and not the good. As aritha-spice has mentioned it's on that kind of thing that the media thrives and also the public relish reading that type of news! The Minister does not seem to be ware of those facts.

Singhala media now come to term and started to realise singhalese are modayas . again its a tiny fraction only started to realise.
it took 50 years for that small fraction to realise.
Weerawansa?s Big Talks And Southern Gullibility

The Janatha Vimuthi Peramuna had contradicted its own words in a move to fool the gullible Southern public. In the latest and desperate move to link UNP leader with LTTE leader, Weerawansa says ??LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran with the objective of retaining Ranil Wickremesinghe as head of the Sri Lanka government launched fresh attacks on the security forces and civilians to disrupt the smooth process of administration by Mahinda Rajapakse,?

The same ?Weerawansa Sahodaraya? last month said that Prabhakaran had killed his own man, Pararajasigham MP for giving support to Ranil Wicramasighe in the last election. Furthermore, the JVP is very aware of move taken by LTTE leader to ensure the victory of JVP candidate Mahinda Rajapakse by enforcing a boycott and disenfranchising innocent North East public.

JVP is yet to comprehend the reasons behind the LTTE boycott.

?Sinhaya Modaya? is a term widely used in Sri Lanka on the gullibility of the Sri Lankan public. The LTTE fascist leader Prabhakaran too had said that Sinhalese South can remember things only for a week. Can Weerawansa fool South with his rhetoric or can South open their eyes to see the wide international picture of Sri Lankan politics? Only time will tell!

I think you are mistaken. I was told that the phrase 'Sinhalaya Modaya........' is not used to explain the gullibility of the Sinhalese people. In fact, it is used to explain the kind nature of Buddhist Sinhalese. To explain this we need analyse the origin of this phrase.

When the Portuguese visited SL they found abundance of animals such as rabbits, deer etc that they could hunt for food. The carnivorous Portuguese enjoyed these foods. Also they experienced that it was extremely easy to hunt as these animals because these animals had not experienced any threats from human hunters in the past and the animals were unaware of the danger. Portuguese could hunt their food in sleep.

The Portuguese also noticed that the Sinhalese did not consume this animal meat. Instead, the Sinhalese ate kawung like giants. Portuguese were surprised to find out that the kawung making process was a complex, tedious and time-consuming process. (I.e. grow the rice for several months, grind it then mix, fry etc). Therefore, they said 'Sinhalaya Modaya kawung kanna yodaya'. This is how this phrase originated.

However, the Portuguese did not realize that Sinhalese were kindhearted vegetarians. The reason the Sinhalese did not eat these meat is not because of their foolishness instead the reason was there deep belief in Buddhist teachings.

This phrase explains the kind nature of SL Sinhalese and not their gullibility.

Hi Siripala !!!!!!

Just keep that gab of yours shut or else the tongue may get bitten.

What boquets are you calling for ?

What about that syringes fiasco ???? How many innocent mothers & mother to be died?
Have you gone into it to find out who had imported substandard syringes at exhorbitant price ?

Who was the local agent ? How much commission was made by him overseas & what was your santhosam ?

No objection to your getting santhosam, make sure the importer gets down quality stuff & not health hazards.
