Sanath gets the nod, Ganegama replaces injured Maharoof

Veteran opener Sanath Jayasuriya left the island on Wednesday, to join the rest of Sri Lankan team mates in Australia for the remainder of the VB Series. Sri Lanka`s national selectors who met on Wednesday, decided to send Jayasuriya as an `additional player` after they were convinced that the left-handed batsman has recovered fully from the shoulder injury he aggravated in New Zealand earlier this month.
Twenty four-year-old NCC seamer Akalanka Ganegama too joined Jayasuriya after fellow seamer Farveez Maharoof was ruled out for three weeks with a groin injury.
`Farveez has a groin injury and after consulting with the physio back in Australia, we decided to send a replacement for him,` national selector K. M. Nelson told `The Island`.
`The requirement was for a seamer and we consulted with the `A` team management and decided to send Akalanka Ganegama who has performed reasonably well in recent times,` Nelson added.
Ganegama, has represented Sri Lanka in two ODIs with his last game for the country dating back to 2001 April.
Jayasuriya, meanwhile, was originally picked to take part in the Trans-Tasman tours of New Zealand and Australia but after he fell in the bath, aggravating a shoulder injury on the morning of the second ODI against New Zealand in Christchurch, he was asked to return home.
Jayasuriya has been chosen for the series after medical advice that he has recovered fully from the shoulder injury. He also went through a strenuous fitness test at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium on Wednesday, in the presence of the cricket board`s physiotherapists and selectors.
Sri Lanka`s next game in the series is against Australia on Sunday at the SCG and in the last two occasions Jayasuriya played there, he came up with match winning hundreds. First he hammered a scintillating 122 in 105 balls against Australia and an equally attacking 106 in 110 balls against England in the VB Series in 2002/2003.
The 36-year-old is the most capped Sri Lankan in both forms of the game, having already played 342 ODIs and 100 Test matches. He`s also one of four players to have completed 10,000 runs in One Day Internationals along with Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Inzamam-ul-Haq.

I thoroughly disagree with your view. i think he should play untill the next world cup. age means nothing in cricket as long as you perform.
the team could obviously use his experience! |

I agree with tusky here. Sanath should play until the next world cup. Also the current open batmen should not be changed during the VB series. Tharanga and Mubarak have done a good job I think Sanath should replace Russel Arnold. What we lack is the big hitters at the end. Edited By - radaw - 20 Jan 2006 15:58:56 GMT |

Sanath is a great asset to our team and a real hero who the opposing teams fear. Even when out of form just his presence makes the opposing teams think a lot. However his fitness is a concern. His shoulder injury seems only to be getting worse. My eleven:
Jayasuriya
Tharanga
Sangakkara
Jayawardene
Attapattu
Mubarak
Dilshan
Vaas
Perera
Ganegama

Whats the deal with malinga, saman jayantha.
with the super sub rule they can have 7 batsmen going in. i too think Sanath should open. arnold has been in good form lately. |

| I think Jayantha has been out of form of late. Arnold is always useful but we need to groom Mubarak and Tharanga for the future. Mubarak's good knock against the South Africans merits his selection again. I don't know what's up with malinga, will look into it. He might give up too many runs for ODI's. He might be better suited for Test's. |

Malinga's with his action is a big distraction to the batsmen.also he is the fastest of them all. he can be a bit erratic sometime.
I caught the game on tuesday. Tharanga failed but Mubarak was good. but i felt they felt a bit ackward in the initial overs.
not like the days when kalu and Sanath go crazy from the get go. pinch hitting a term normally associated with baseball was brought into cricket because of these two. |

| Ahhh the glory days. you are right, these two don't have the same spunk, but openers, at least one of them, should be able to hang around a long time, I think the present two have the technique and the temperament for such sticking power...what about Dilshan as an opener..he is a dashing striker of the ball...as for Malinga, you are right but i think once the batsmen start to read him, they use his pace against him...pace isn't everything as Vaasy has shown but I like Malinga and want him to succeed also. |

Do you realize that the limited overs rules have changed a bit now.
super sub,
power play ( two 5 over stretches when 9 fielders are inside the circle.)
only first 10 overs with the fielding restrictions. |

| Though Tharanga didn't score much against S.Africa, those who saw his hundred with NZ will agree that he's a very good player. Definitely, Mubarak and Tharanga should open and Jayasuriya replace Arnold. |
