President meets Co-Chairs, assures restraint
Tuesday, 10 January 2006 - 1:35 AM SL Time

President Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday assured the Co-Chairs of the peace process that the government would act with restraint despite a spate of truce-breaking attacks by the LTTE but warned it would be obliged to take all necessary measures to prevent further attacks.

At a meeting with the Ambassadors of the Co-chair countries of the Tokyo Donor Conference comprising Japan, Norway, United States and the European Union, the President condemned the killing of 13 Navy personnel in the strongest terms.

The President however assured the Co-chairs that abuse of power by the Security Forces would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The President informed the Co-chairs that an investigation was pending on the recent deaths of five students in Trincomalee and that the perpetrators would be brought to Justice.

The Government in a statement on yesterday`s meeting said:

President Rajapakse met the Ambassadors of the Co-chair countries and briefed them on the escalation of violence by the LTT`E and in panicu1ar the unprovoked suicide attack on a Sri Lanka, Navy fast attack craft on Saturday which claimed the lives of 13 Navy personnel and destroyed the Navy vessel. The President condemning the attack in the strongest possible terms identified it as a suicide operation which had all the hallmarks of the LTTE. The explosive laden boat had approached the navy vessel which was on routine patrol, using cover of civilian fishing boats and rammed into the Navy FAC in a typical Sea Tiger suicide attack.

The President expressed concern over the callous disregard shown by the LTTE to the ceasefire agreement. He pointed out to the diplomats that while the government remained committed to upholding the obligations of the ceasefire agreement, the LTTE was abusing the government`s restraint and had progressively escalated offensive terror operations, even as the government was awaiting a positive response from the LTTE to resume talks.

The President indicated satisfaction with the responses from the United States following the recent meetings Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had with counterparts in Washington DC last week.

The Ambassadors of the Co- chairs expressed their strong appreciation of the restraint and responsibility shown by the government in the face of escalating attacks by the LTTE. They reiterated their support for the Sri Lanka peace process and offered to continue to work in cooperation with the government towards this end. .

Responding to a query by the Co-chairs on the recent `Strangers Night` operation it was explained that this was a routine law enforcement procedure aimed at `clearing the neighbourhood of criminal elements including drug traffickers and gangsters, which will also take place in other areas of the island. It was emphasized that more than 90% of those detained were released on the same day and that due process was observed.

The President emphasized that the government stood ready to begin talks on strengthening the effective implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement at the earliest. The issue of the venue for these talks was discussed and it was noted that the offer by Japan was welcomed by the Co-chairs during the high level meeting in Brussels last month.

Senior government officials were associated with the President at the meeting.

On Sunday, President Rajapakse vowed to ensure the safety of all citizens of the country while cautioning that his patience should not be misinterpreted for weakness.

Addressing a ceremony in Horana, the President said patience was instilled in him due to the influence of Buddhism and the Daham Pasalas he attended and his patience was not a sign of weakness.

Other possibilities ae also discussed as this

many of you dont know if a fishing boat gone into the dovra with limited speeed it may have the same effect. all the boats carrymany gallons of petrol for their engine if they ram the boat that dovra maybe burned and sank.
if that fisherman body is found government going to say he is a LTTE.

Possibilities
1 , LTTE have over 1000 of its members working in army, navy and other , would one of them blow and jumped in the sea?

2 ,LTTE are not fool to waste one of their valued cardet to waste for this small boat.

3, would those Navy personal rob the catch of those poor fisherman and making BBQ in the Dovra , it possible it may be the gas cilinder blown?

4 , Sl army is distributing guns , climore those guys getting it and selling it. wound any angry fisherman taken the revenge.
