'the fact is ltte air wing is truly not match for the slaf.'
If we to engage with our air assets, what we have now is more than enough to confuse the slaf. Edited By - tigeress19 - 4 Jan 2006 20:03:28 GMT |

| Tigress we do not need necessarily need to utilize our air assets in a conventional manner, we need to negate the advantage that the SLA enjoys because of the SLAF, this involves the destruction of SLAF's air prowess either through SAMs, destruction on ground or any other asymmetric means. Negation of the third wing of SL forces, SLAF will ensure total domination on the battlefield in the strategic sense ;) |

| No not mere confusion but denial of usage, as in extended impairment of SLAF's ability to operate until other means to destroy the SLAF are successful, or execution of operations to ensure the destruction of the SLAF in an overwhelming manner for the coming war. |

The LTTE could use stingers, however the ones in possession with the LTTE are 2nd generation and without proper maintenance these systems nowadays are highly ineffective against low level fast jets.. the LTTE has not yet bought down any SLAF Mig-27 or Kfir fighters using SAMS in previous conflicts.. In addition the conflict that bought the stinger to notoriety, Afghanistan, the Mujahadeen fighters were only able to bring down Mil-24 gunships and Su-25 frogfoot attack aircraft, they were incapable of actively engaging and destroying Mig-27?s that were also used in that theatre of war.
These ?new weapons? are unlikely to include 4th generation SAMs or highly unlikely, because of the arms ?back? channels now be extensively monitored by the US and others, especially the movement of advanced SAM missiles, primarily because of the fear Islamic militants acquiring them or any know designated terrorist outfits.
Therefore the use of SAMs in this conflict will be used to primarily bring down low speed aircraft like SLAF Mil-35 gunship, transport aircraft or LTTE Zlin Z 143.. The fast jets are in most probability safe.. Again we shall have to wait and see..
Another attack on SLAF ground air assets will be expected, so depending on how serious the GOSL perceives this threat will determine there countermeasures.. so only open conflict will reveal this.
Once any LTTE airfields are neutralized, as per my previous post finding alternative takeoff and landing strips will be very difficult because of the length required. Additionally the undercarriage of the Zlin Z 143 is not really suited for grass or dirt runaways.. therefore another issue for the LTTE to consider.
Again any of these ?special weapons? are unlikely to include any air assets that will dramatically shift the balance of power in the LTTE?s favour. Again time will tell?. |

| Theres a possibility that the Zlins were only acquired to easily train the LTTE black air tigers for flying other aircraft ;) |

| That is a possibility.. however flyig a Zlin 143 is completely different to flying a fast jet, the jump is too big, thats why theres always an intermediate subsonic trainer stage... so unlikely |

I would like to touch upon the denial of usage concept ? This concept would only be applicable if the LTTE is successfully able to deny the SLAF use of its own airspace, meaning the SLAF is unable to use its air asset?s in any capacity.. The only options available to the LTTE are destruction of SLAF air assets or deny usage of SLAF runaways ..
The SLAF currently has 19 strike fighters in active service
11 Kfir C1/C2?s
4 Mig-27?s
4 F-7
This combination will rely solely on the main airport as base of operations, as a result depending on how smart the GOSL is, chances are in war time this will be heavily guarded, considering past experiences. The Kfir C1/C2 or the Mig 27 can reach jaffna in under 20mins once airborne from the main airbase. This combination would prove to be a considerable force for the LTTE Zlin Z 143?s to counter. As a result a head to head is suicide. The Z 143 cannot be truly expected to take on an offensive role if the following aircraft are airborne. Or be able to stop any SLAF attack on LTTE troop positions.. This begs the question what can they be used for????
A possibility is a night attack- which is extremely difficult but not outside the realm of plausibility.
A US Navy destroyer is apparently patrolling off the North/East Srilankan coast.. There is chatter between the SL Navy and the Destroyer .. LTTE arms ship sighted of the Mullativu coast .. Things are getting interesting in the subcontinent. |
