US Intel Sats have made several undisclosed sweeps of Srilanka since the Asian tsunami of 2004, several of these sweeps have been over LTTE territory..

High Resolution Thermal Maps of LTTE held territory have identified 4 light aircraft.. Images in the Visible spectrum have indicated all access roads to and from the airfield, including grass clearings.. and most revealing as been the location of the LTTE light airdefences..

These sweeps have also highlighted LTTE heavy artillery and troop locations along their FDL.. The LTTE have since moved some of these pieces.. however successive sweeps have located these, and has since been able to build a database containing the movement of these artillery units.

The US has authorised the Israeli government to supply JDAM?s to the SLAF. These GPS guided ?free-fall? weapons will provide the SLAF for the first time some guided weapon capability.. A team of Israeli Aerospace Engineers are scheduled to land in SL to modify the Kfir C1/C2 to carry these weapons..

The Reason American Rhetoric has increased recently with regards to the SL conflict and dramatic policy shifts is primarily due to two reasons ?

(1) Officials in capital hill are worried about recent attempts by the LTTE to establish itself in ThamilNadu and invoke Thamil nationalism in the Indian southblock, this development is seen as a direct threat to US software interests in ThamilNadu.

(2) The increase of LTTE activity in the southern sector of Trincomolee is seen as a direct threat to the port city.. The US has very long term plans for this port, certain policy makers want to rest control of trincomolee and establish a permanent US naval presence in the region .. this is primarly a Submarine capability, US fast attack boats will find the deep harbour ideal for silent stealth operations..

I concur with Kanthun.

Chennai is a hub for a diverse array of services, but Bangalore and a few other cities are more critical in regards to BPO straight to USA. Trinco is debatable because USA has Diego Garcia...

Mig-29C,

These are my challenges to you.

1. If the ltte move their arsenel or light weight aircreaft to a another location, the already taken satallite pictures are useless, arent they?

2. If they relocate them, then the SLAF have to recalculate the GPS location to feed in JDAMs. How could you say they will be able to recalculate the newest positions without newer satallite images. We are not sure if the USA provide the those images as soon as SLAF need them.

3. The JDAMs have at least an error of 13m radius circle, though JDAMs are economical to SL's economy.

4. LTTE can shoot down the JDAMs before fall in to the targets.

The ThamilNadu threat is very credible .. US and Indian economic/technological cooperation is advancing at a rapid rate, US interests in the subcontinent are thus increasing as never seen before.. AS a result, the US currently see?s the rise of the LTTE as a real destabilizing element in the region.. A situation the US does not want to deal with 5-10 years down the line is problems in India primarily from ThamilNadu nationalists, the direct result being the existence of Thamil Eelam in Srilanka. The US is aware that it cannot get heavy handed with ThamilNadu if that occurs.. Therefore, to prevent such a scenario, the US is going to prevent the break up Srilanka.. This will be done in a two fold scheme.. The US will push the GOSL to find a solution within a federal framework, and to ensure thamil nationalism does not rise again in the future, establish itself in trincomolee..

The US Naval Base in trincomolee is seen as a long term objective.. its not seen as a current option.. However, the US has maked trincomolee ...

Diego Garcia is a US bomber base for its B-52s, the US does not have a submarine presence anywhere near the Indian ocean or a strong Naval presence.. Trincomolee is seen as the ideal staging point.

A lot of detail about the images cannot be revealed.. however, important assets like the GPS coordinates for the runaway, bunkers and airdefence systems are fixed and cannot change.. The aircraft cannot be moved that easily, relocation away from the airfield is tactically unsound.. The artillery movement will present the greatest challenge, however their movements in the last 11 months have been documented.. the key issue is, there are only a set number of points they can be moved to for effective use..

The JDAM once released from its aircraft is extremely difficult to track in flight because of its size, its impact speed is quite high.. Suffice to say, no one in the history of air power has found a successfully method of engaging and destroying any free fall munitions.. the LTTE does not possess the technology to destroy such a target once released..It is nearly impossible to engage it with IR guided SAM?s because the heat signature is very, very low.. Radar guided SAMS will need the target to be illuminated for atleast 10-15mins to get an accurate target lock, again with the target in question this is not guaranteed ...

The Purpose of the JDAM is for near accurate target elimination, they will ensure fixed targets like runaways and bunkers can be successfully engaged.. however for more mobile targets, like troops and artillery, the accuracy is sufficient to ensure near fatal damage.
