The establishment of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) is a farce according to Lanka Private Bus Association President Gemunu Wijeratne.
Mr. Wijeratne said that most of the new buses introduced by the SLTB were buses received as tsunami aid, and remarked that the government is showing a false picture of the whole situation.
'The new buses distributed in the Attanagalla area and said to have been purchased from a grant are really 10 year old buses donated by Japan as tsunami aid,' he alleged.
'These buses actually belong to the bus owners in the areas affected by the disaster and should be distributed to them as compensation to cover the damage caused to their vehicles.'
He said that SLTB workers salaries will be increased with the re-establishment and more money of the public would be wasted.
'At present the SLTB gets around Rs 400-450 million from the Treasury to pay monthly salaries. With a new increased salary scale it will amount to about Rs 550m resulting further losses.'
Mr Wijeratne said that although the President wanted joint time tables it would not become a reality because of the intervention of the Provincial Councils.
'They have not followed orders of the President on earlier occasions so it would not happen now' he said.
'The only way to solve the present problem is to go to for a new transport system and we are hoping to do this with the UNP after the Presidential elections,' he said adding that November would spell a change for the transport scene. (JP)

Mr Gemunu Wijeratna, Don?t you think the Private bus service is the biggest curse to the commuters? You people do not want SLTB because you want a monopoly in this sector for your own sake. But it is not good for the people. You contested on UNP ticket at the last general election and you were the last on the list got very few preferential votes, little better than Mervin Silva. Imagine how much they dislike your service. I think that was a first-class reply to your Private Bus Owners Association from the voters.
