Crocodile tears of Tigers
Friday, 30 September 2005 - 2:04 AM SL Time

The Tigers are gnashing their teeth and pounding their chests following the EU travel ban. `How could they do this to us within weeks of giving us VIP treatment'` they must be wondering. Their consternation is understandable. They feel badly let down at the hour of their need by the very ones who mollycoddled them and helped them gain international recognition. That, somebody should tell the LTTE, is the way with the world. Dictators and terror outfits sooner or later become too embarrassing for their white masters. The fate that befell Idi Amin, Bokassa, Papa Doc and many other tyrants and terror groups like Al Quaeda is a case in point. The White House dropped the IRA like a hot potato, having entertained its leaders for years. The Tigers would never have thought India would go against them. But it did happen.

LTTE Spokesman S. P. Tamilselvam has warned the EU that the ban will be a threat to the peace process. What the EU has asked the LTTE to do is to desist from terror. Such a call, we thought, augured well for the CFA, which is the basis of the peace process Mr. Selvam is talking about. Is he of the view that continued violence is the way to carry the peace process forward'

The LTTE wanting the EU to lift the ban is like a soccer player asking the referee to withdraw a yellow so that he could continue to play hell on the field. For the LTTE the red is another assassination away. It will have to abstain from foul play if it is to avoid being thrown out of the European Union altogether.

Apart from putting the Tigers in a straitjacket, the EU action has debunked the bizarre theory that to oppose the LTTE is to oppose the Tamil community as well as the peace process. Whenever the LTTE comes under fire over its terror, the knee jerk reaction of the LTTE and the paid peaceniks thriving on the conflict is to stick the label of `extremism` on its critics. Their strategy has yielded results to a great extent as evident from the pusillanimity on the part of politicians and a section of the media to criticize the LTTE for fear of being `branded extremists or chauvinists or warmongers.`

We have a question for those worthies who are tilting at windmills: Is the EU being unfair by the Tamil community or promoting war by taking on the LTTE' Only a crackpot will answer in the affirmative. The US, the UK and the EU, which have taken a tough stand on the LTTE are far from being prejudiced against the Sri Lankan Tamils, who are living happily in those countries in large numbers. Those nations are now refusing to be fooled any more by LTTE`s bogus claims and trying to repair their image which has suffered considerable damage owing to their leniency to the LTTE. On the other hand, they are now in a position to separate the LTTE from the Tamil community. With terrorism manifesting itself at their respective doorsteps, double standards on terror are no longer possible. For example, while ordering its police to blow the brains of terror suspects off without prior warning, how can Britain ask Sri Lanka to give in to the LTTE terror'

Mr. Selvam may try his old tricks once again to get the ban lifted. However much the Tigers shed crocodile tears for the peace process, the ban is going to stay put, unless they put an end to their terror and respect the CFA. Norway has cut a very pathetic figure with its campaign to get the LTTE off the hook. The EU ban, which came despite its lobbying, has taken it down a peg or two. The Norwegian diplomats who are openly supporting the LTTE terror have put to shame those brave Norwegians who resisted Quisling to roll back Nazi invasion to protect democracy. Is it that the descendants of Quisling and Neo Nazis have crept into the Norwegian Foreign Service and government'

Now that EU has at long last caught the Tigers by what hurts them most, it is hoped, it will tighten the grip until they give up terror. That is the way to help achieve a lasting peace in this country.

Tigers shedding crocodile tears may have more demands beyond what the Tamil minority were subjected to by the hands of the Chauvinistic GOSL policies. However over the last 30 years the Singhalese them selves were not able to come to any agreement what package they are going to offer to the Tamil minority. This is what is pathetic. Tigers have shown better adaptation and survival skills through deception than the Singhalese who had shown a slow learning process to acquire the modern philosophy of secularism ,minority rights to safeguard the unitary status of our country

LTTErs are like SHYLOCK the money lender in Venice who 'WANTED AN EXACT POUND OF FLESH ' from the borrower who failed pay back on time and ultimately was about to lose his life the punishment for failure to CUT AN EXACT POUND OF FLESH.

SO BE CAREFUL IN DEMANDING WHAT IS NOT POSSIBLE!

LTTE is so used to killing, if they let loose they will continue to do it.

They have financial back up from extortion money from diaspora, arms smuggling, drug trafficking and businesses.

GOSL has to reduce their privilge of free moving in the GOSL controlled areas of the country.
