Presidential Candidate Mahinda Rajapakse addressing his inaugural campaign rally in Colombo yesterday and flanked by his controversial JVP and JHU backers, pledged to work towards an undivided nation where all races and religions could live in security in an environment of genuine and lasting peace.
Mr. Rajapakse told thousands of supporters at the Town Hall grounds he would make a real difference and had finalized plans for economic development that would benefit the common people and not just the rich elite.
He stressed the need for a national economy, heritage and culture and the eradication of poverty. ?The date of the Presidential Election is a good day for me because by the 18th morning, my birthday, I trust the people would have granted me the responsibility of taking the country forward to prosperity and peace,? he said.
Mr. Rajapakse said he had been in politics for 35 years and had not changed from his simple and humble ways close to the people of this country.
He vowed that even election to the high office of President would not change him from his simple people-centered path.
The presidential candidate said that soon after he was nominated by his party his opponents had started a dirty mud-slinging campaign against him but he would not resort to such low levels and would campaign cleanly though strongly.
Mr. Rajapakse said under his national economic plans, free education and free health care including nutrition, would be protected while priority would be given to local production so that more productive job opportunities could be created.
He pledged that vital national resources would not be sold to global corporations.

| He has to keep his party undivided first. With all the contradictory policies that he adopts for a few votes, this is the beginning of the end for SLFP. |

Productive Presidents and Prime Ministers were made by experience, not born or curban copies of others. Past Presidents and Prime Ministers like Rt Hon Mr D. S. Senanayake, Rt Hon Dudley Senanayake and Rt Hon Ranasing Premadasa are prime examples. Prosperity and harmony was always in their agenda.
We live in the beginning of the 21st centaury.
Power hungry, Shinhala, Buddhist Mr Mahinda Rajapaksha's collaboration with the JVP and the JHU demonstrates his motive to scavenge the vote bank of the JVP and the JHU. It's nothing different to what Mr S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike did by forming the Mahajana Exsath Peramuna (MEP, People's United Front) coalition in 1956.
On the current political platform Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha is glorifying the unsuccessful economic policies that are in place by the current government, as his current economic policies for the next presidential election. Where those economic policies has degraded the economy in Sri Lanka, in a large scale.
Mr Mahinda Rajapaksha is follower rather than a leader.
By promoting Mr Mahinda Rajapaksha, as nation are we going go forward or backwards.

'DINAWAMU MAHINDA PARADAVAMU SRI LANKA'!
The above is a more appropriate slogan that depicts whats in store for the country in the unfortunate event of Mahinda being elected the 5th President of Sri Lanka. The country is at cross roads and the SLFP/JVP candidate Mahinda has no solution to the twin problems that confronts the nation namely a solution to the ethnic issue and the ever deteriorating economic situation. If we take our minds back to 1994 the SLFP/JVP candidate made a series of promises to the nation and to her coalition partners in respect of the the Constitution, the economy and ethnic problem.Has any of the promises been fulfilled? On the eve of her departure from the Presidency we are nearer to War than Peace, the economy is in dire straits with double digit inflation, unemployment is high among the 'sinhala only' educated, the law and order situation is at the lowest, the moral standards has drooped to the extent that the SLFP spokesman has suggested the age of consent to be reduced to 13 years from the present 16 years. Now once again the SLFP/JVP candidate has come before the voters not with any solutions to the pressing problem but with the usual mantra that Ranil is betraying the country and is offering it on a plater to the 'Demala'.This has been the theme song since the 1990's to win over the gullible sinhalese voter. Its time for the southern voter for his sake and the countries future to look at the issues rationally and vote the only candidate who is capable of turning the country around-Ranil Wickremasinghe because if he is defeated by the political mob the country is defeated and not the UNP. |
