Thurstan`s under-the-post try shames Isipatana for first time
Tuesday, 20 September 2005 - 3:05 AM SL Time

Thurstan winger Shane Aravinda sent the Isipathanian supporters into mourning when he turned the game in his team`s favour with a 50-meter dash to score a match winning under-the-post try to help Thurstan record their first ever win in their 38-year old annual Abdul Jabbar trophy rugby encounter at Longden Place yesterday.

Of the past 37 matches played Isipathana won the trophy on 36 occasions with the 1975 match ending in a scoreless draw when Thurstan was led by Tissa Wickramanayake.

The Thurstanites took yesterday`s game by 15 points (one goal, one try, one penalty) as against six points (two penalties) by Isipathana. The winners led 5-3 at the breather. The final score may indicate an easy win for Thurstan, but the winners though dominating the game for most part were made to fight hard for their victory.

They made the match tough by kicking astray penalties in front of the post and making vital mistakes when scoring opportunities were there for the taking. On the other hand it was not Isipathana`s day as they were nowhere near the form displayed during the early stage of the season.

Thurstan drew first blood when centre Thilan Lakmal went over for a try with the conversion fluffed by fly half Dilan Perera. With a minute to go for the short whistle Isipathana being offered a penalty for an infringement grabbed the opportunity with full-back Reza Mubarak making no mistake with the kick.

On resumption Thurstan missed a chance of increasing the lead in the very first minute when Dilan Perera again fluffed an under-the-post penalty. Ten minutes later he again disappointed his supporters with another missed kick. In the 23rd minute Isipathana took over the lead when Reza Mubarak made no mistake with another penalty offered. But it was short-lived as three minutes later Dilan Perera helped Thurstan to take back the lead by booting over a penalty.

With just over a minute away from the end came that dashing try from winger Shane Aravinda who grasped the ball in a melee and sprinted over 50 meters to score with Dilan Perera making no mistake with the conversion to put the issue beyond doubt as it sealed the game for the Thurstanites.

Referee: Orville Perera

This is their one and only win against PATHANA(the RUGBY KINGS in Sri Lanka).
Remember, Zimbabwe beat Australia(the world's no 1 Cricket team). but there is no damage done for their immage, because the world still belives Australia is the no 1 in Cricket. Likewise, this is not a shame for PATHANIANS, because, everyone knows PATHANA is the gretest in Rugby.

I agree with you Dulip, but not 100%. Since last year Kingswoodinans are the 'Kings of Local Schools Rugby'. And also Anthonians had a great time.
Anyway only from this defeat no damage done to PATHANA's name. That's true.
