The Ruhunu Janatha Party which has pledged support to UNP Presidential Candidate Ranil Wickeremesighe is to field a candidate at the upcoming presidential elections as a tactical move.
The party`s General Secretary Anura Soyza told a news conference yesterday the decision to field a candidate was a tactical move to support Mr. Wickremesinghe who would thereby get additional air time for his propaganda.
Party leader Ajantha Soyza has meanwhile accepted the post of UNP Organizer for Ratgama. Explaining the stand taken by the party Ajantha Soyza said his party decided to support Mr. Wickremesinghe as he had stood for devolution of power within a united Sri Lanka.
Lashing out at SLFP Presidential Candidate Mahinda Rajapakse, Mr. Soyza said the premier had abandoned SLFP policies by signing agreements with the JVP and the JHU.
'Supporting Mr. Rajapakse would mean destroying the future generations as his stand would push the nation towards war,' he explained.
The Ruhun Janatha Party which backed President Chandrika Kumaratunga at the last presidential election, had contested every general election in the recent past and at the last local government elections it won two seats in the Balapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha, polling 1000 votes more than the JVP.

| Additional airtime does not guarantee additional votes. All these rouges will go to the dustbin after the election. |
