Magha,

Majority Sinhalease have as less rights as minority communities. It has been a very long term claim that majority Sinhalease have preferential rights. Go any where as a Sinhalease citizen Perera with no connections, no friends and no contacts. Let me know how long you take to get anything done from a simple Police report to a salaray arrears.

I was reading some comments by my Tamil friends about SL police taking long, taking bribes and messing around generally when they want a police report. The same thing, in no less terms, happen to Sinhalease too.

Look at the Tsunami issue. Tamils were claiming that they got a bad deal (or no deal). Go to South. See for your self. No one has got their houses back they are also still in refugee camps.

Of course two wrongs dont make it right. Please dont tell me only Tamils are discriminated against. It is poor, less fortunate, with no connections from all communities who are discriminated against.

Hi tigress19,

Thanks for your comments and how are you? Hope everything is okay with you and hope you are keeping well.

As for your comments, I beg to disagree. Minorities should be given equal rights. They should never be discriminated against. No body should think less of them and some of us did and still do think that they have the same rights and priviledges as the majority.

I am afraid I can not agree with you that they should be given a special right. Why should anyone do that? They are no less and no special. If all are treated equally there should be no problem. If their feelings get hurt because they were not treated in some special way, then they are not being reasonable.

If the minority expects to have some special rights because they happen to be minority, do you wnat that to happen? Would you rather you be given special rights on merit rather than because you are minority? Wouldnt you think it is an insult?

If we hire someone from the minority community because of some quota system or because we have to have some minority person dont you think he would be offended? I want to be hired on merit. I want to be treated well on merit. Not because I am from the minority community. In fact I would be terribly offended if I ever come to know that I was hired not on merit but on some minority skewed quota system.
Well those are my thoughts.

Dear TiggaLivzinAu,

Thanks for your kind words. Let me first answer your question.

I think my post is misleading to give the wrong impression that SLA take the orders by politicians. Let me clarify this.

Some of us in the SLA took our DUTY seriously NOT the orders given by politicians to do their political work seriously. We could easily distinguish the difference between duty and helping politicians. For me and my boys if the duty is to protect a politician that is what exactly it is. Protect the politicians. That means guard him during his movements and all other times when we are in charge. That DOES NOT mean do his poster campaigns, terrorise his opponents, threaten or pretend to threaten his opponents.

So if my post reads anything to that effect, that was not meant to be. We are soldiers, not politicians security guards. Some of us felt strongly about it. Some of us had the courage to refuse when they want our boys to go protect their henchmen who were on the road doing posters. Some officers had the courage to tell the politician off in not so complementary terms.

To answer your question, some of us take our duty and only our duty seriously. Not pakkali service ordered by politicians. That is why some of us get unpopular.

TiggaLivzinAu
I never had the opportunity to go to ITS. I know some did. But I did not. Are they still sending soldiers there? Do you happen to know?

SK63,
I agree with your comments.
In a country for people to live in peace and harmony every body should have equal rights and no body should be given special rights. Our country has fallen in to this sorry state because the question of equal rights had not been addressed well, Instead the concept of special rights and privileges had been promoted. This is true with Singhalese , Tamils and Muslims. Similarly a country should have one statutory fair to every body. As sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander one law for Singhalese ,other for the Tamils and the next for Muslims is ridiculous. Those who canvass for special rights are the people who create ethnic and religious divisions, disharmony, and separatism. With equal rights people should be given equal opportunity as well.
