Bhikku student allegedly ragged by seniors
Thursday, 1 September 2005 - 2:45 AM SL Time

A newly admitted Bhikku student of Mihintale Raja Rata University who had been allegedly ragged inhumanly by four senior Bhikku students was admitted to the Anuradhapura General hospital in a serious condition.

The victim, Diyabeduma Ratanasara Thera (29) said that senior Bhikku students forcibly removed his robes and treated him inhumanly inspite of informing them that he was a diabetic patient. He had also made a complaint at the Mihintale police station. The victim told police that he had been harassed from time to time by senior Bhikku students after his admission to the Social Science and Humanities faculty.

On Friday (30) he had been taken to a room by the four senior Bhikku students together with another new-comer and had been harassed inhumanly. He said that he was made to stand naked in the presence of others. He was compelled to do various things including rude and vulgar acts. 'When I refused to carryout certain orders they abused me in indecorous language. They forced a piece of rigifoam into my mouth. I found it difficult to breath', he said and added that he would go back to the Pansala after being discharged. The victim also said that he is from a poor family with a blind father.

It was his parents that had spent money for his education even after entering the priest hood. He desires that action be taken against those who tortured him.

If any presidents elected should come with new policy for this rowdy monks.
Monks should be given extra punishment for any crime they comit ,
they are placed in high by the society and they should take responsibility .
punishement should be harsh , and double than any other normal human being. that way srilanka can fill h whole jails with monks. and let them build budha statue there. not on the streets and srilankan can live in peace.

I don't think this incident happened only because they are Buddhist monks. Yes, it's true that we expect them to lead a venerable life, not to behave like some other university students by ragging new comers.
But, critizing all monks just because of a few did something wrong is not right.
Monks or ordinary people, if they do something illegal, they should be punished.

Ragging has been happening in every university- when someone got injured or died, media talk about it a couple of weeks, then everyone forgets it until the next.
Is there any presure from people to university students, to their sons and daughters, to their brothers and sisters, and in this case to their fellow monks to stop this inhumane ragging at all?

Waruna,
You are wrong, there is no Western or Eastern values. Infact there are people here has better values than in SL. What do you mean by values spoiling our country? Look what you guys have done using the name of Budhism. To have a good moral values you don't have to be born in any religion or any country, it's all up to you how you practise. See people like Gandhi lived in S.Africa and educated in UK, didn't he show an example of Dharma and Ahimsa? Countries like Taiwan , Thailand even India they have more western influences yet their values were not diminished by others. It's all JVP BS,nationalism crap.

First respect your own country men, see how people are fighting in this forum for no reason, we all born in same country and learned the eastern values, see people like SWRD, JR,CBK all the politicians, what kind of moral values they taught to our country, what is wrong learning some good values from west. Try to get the best of both, that is the key, the whole reson why we have tamil sinhala problem in SL because each other doesn't learn the others language or culture, yet you go to a foreign country and work hard to learn other languages, even in SL people love to learn japanese, french or German not Tamil or sinhala, why? How can you have peace if you don't have good communication and understanding!
