President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday said there was clear evidence that the LTTE was involved in the killing of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar though it denied the charge, but she pledged to continue the negotiation process aimed at seeking lasting peace.
In a late night address to the nation on state television, the President called on the people to be calm and restraint and not be provoked by extremist elements.
She said the nation would not bow down before terrorism and violence.
The President said:
`It is a profound sadness. We have lost a leader, a dear colleague, and a minister who worked closely with me to see the vision for a united, peaceful Sri Lanka come true.
'Initial evidence indicates that the LTTE is responsible. It is unacceptable that a group committed to the ceasefire agreement and continuance of the peace process commits such an act. It has denied its involvement, but the evidence contradicts that claim. It only shows its long held desire. Long before September 11 and the London Tube Station bombings, Minister Kadirgamar spoke against terrorism and convinced the international community that terrorism was not a freedom struggle. He was instrumental in getting the international community to recognise the LTTE for what it is. He also played a crucial role in pursuing me to negotiate with the LTTE. He created an atmosphere for the LTTE to come before the negotiating table.
'The entire nation will miss him, and it is a horrendously barbaric act against an unarmed civilian who stood for freedom, harmony, brotherhood and peace. He joins the long list of Tamil leaders like Alfred Duraiyappa, Amrithalingam, Neelan Tiruchelvan, Rajani Thiranagama - all murdered by the LTTE in an attempt to subjugate the Tamil people. Terrorism has become the single most global phenomenon. Only now the western nations are suffering at the terrorists` hands but we have suffered for decades.
'This incident will increase the international community`s resolve and stand against terror and violence of the LTTE. We shall never bow down to terror. We cannot let terror and hatred overcome us. I will redouble my efforts, to implement devolution of power through dialogue for the benefit of all communities and for this the government needs the support of the people and the international community.'

Peace process is very important and rapid direct dialogue with LTTE should be started without any prior-condition.
As head of nation, Mrs.CBK should without any prio consultation whatsoever with religious leaders, invite LTTE with Tamils leaders to discuss ( face to face ) and sort out all remaining problems little by little.
It is not so simple for Mrs.CBK but it is still possible by inviting all these sinhalese political parties to organise a summit and discuss fully to come out with one voice to meet LTTE.
This is not my opinion but this is also the opionion or wish of many western countries including the Indian government.
The proposition of LTTE can not be all accepted but still it is considered as a reasonable demand and this could be only sorted out and solved through dialogues.
Here again, the government should think that the situation olf Tamils under military occupation and this can not be allowed or accepted by tamils or world communities.
enough is enough.
If LTTE has full respected and accepted the cease-fire agreement signed in 2002, why can't the government starts withdrawing arm forces not from Northeast but at least from all the residential areas, schools, hospitals and other private residents.
These are simple but little things but this could give more chances for peace and this Tiny Island can not afford for any stupid war as demanded very often by arm forces or military generals. ( This is just for buisness only ).
If you feel that you can change Northeast into a new desert by uprooting all palms trees to build any empty bunkers then there is no use of think any peace in future. |

What srilankan president fail to tell the public , Mr Kadiragama is a Tamil , inteectual & barrester , who have fought and won in many cases therefore i hired him . as they are barrasitor , they dont see morraly or ethically all they care about him is who pays him and they will defend them.
in this case Chandrika hired him and she paid well , and he won many adventuras cases. he did not see justice was done to tamils or not .
with his smartness he argued a guilty person as innocent ,( in this case guilty person is a srilankan government.) and he won.
tamils should not get angry with him , because he is a barrasitor , if we had paid him well he would have done the work for us. and he have no love for his country all he care about was money and he got them. |

Saintclair i accept your comments , what CBK not realise is thing are going to go out of hand so soon , all the general publics in north east are taking self defence training , as they cannot continue with crime commited by arm personal therefore they urged LTTE to give those training.(karatee etc)
arm personal are unrully they are steeling from shops, houses , harrasing general publics raping 8-9 year olds,
therefore residence have come together to defeat that , we will be hearing soon stories like ,
' public beat to death a army personal for stelling in their house,'
' people in the area burned a army personal alive for raping a 9 year old'
who can we balme?? |

CBK, you r fully responsible for these killings next to the Grand Idiot Traoitor PRanil as you have failed to cover the loopholes in the CFA.At the last General Elections your pledges were to cancel the CFA and to chase out the Nordics and many voted the UPFA.You blamed Ranil for giving in to LTTE demands while they were carrying out their assasinations unabbetted.
What have you done so far to STOP THSE BRUTAL KILLINGS? Instead you have being providing these mass murderers with copter rides at our expence.
These animals have no respect for any law as the are SO UNEDUCATED HALF BRAINED ILLETERATE SECTION of the Tamil population.
Atleast learn a lesson now!
Do away with eth PTOMS and CFA and enforce the PTA and continue emergency to protect the BALANCE POPULATION! |

There is so much hate on this blog. are we going to repeat history of 56 and 83? yes it is a painful process of moving towards peace.
it is a fact in conflict resolution, one party will want the maximum and the other will offer the minimum. it may take many years or decades to have a final solution. there will be ups and downs like what we are facing today with the loss of the foreign minister. but we need to stay focused and get back to resuming the peace negotiations.
it is very unfortunate the rationale of most of the bloggers in this forum is negative half empty side. This is a result of the JVP prevented the advancement of the process by so effectively fueling the south with its anti-peace lines. it is time up the other mainstream parties and civil society groups step up and educate the people of the half full side peace to counter the spoilers of peace.
it is 22 years since the present phase of the conflict. are we going to continue with this negative energy or move to a better future? |
