LTTE: Back to terrorism

In a recent article on international jihadi terrorism as personified by Al Qaeda, I had written: `The world is back to 9/10` as a result of the international community`s failure to act firmly against Pakistan`s continued sponsorship of jihadi terrorism from its territory and against Pakistan`s non-implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution No 1373 relating to action against terrorism.
Sri Lanka is back to 9/10 too. The cold-blooded assasination of Lakshman Kadirgamar, Sri Lanka`s Tamil-speaking foreign minister, by as yet unidentified elements suspected to be from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam at Colombo on Friday, August 12, is yet another proof -- if further proof is still needed -- as to what happens when the international community mollycoddles terrorist organisations, whether of the jihadi or non-jihadi variety.
It was the international community`s post-9/11 determination as demonstrated by the unanimous passage of the UN Security Council Resolution No 1373, which partly contributed to a change of tactics, if not mindset, on the part of the LTTE and thereby made it seek a cease-fire and agree to peace talks with the Sri Lankan government.
Even while ostensibly observing the cease-fire after boycotting the peace talks since April 2003, the LTTE gave many indications that it had not abandoned the use of terrorism for acheving its political objectives. It continued to recruit young persons -- many of them children -- for training purposes, clandestinely smuggle arms and ammunition and even microlite aircraft from abroad and strengthen its capability for acts of maritime terrorism with funds flowing from the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora in the West without any action being taken by the Western governments to stop the flow and freeze suspected
LTTE bank accounts under the UN Resolution.
The revolt in March 2004, by a large number of its members in the Eastern Province headed by `Colonel` Karuna against the discriminatory policies of the leadership from the Northern Province against the Tamils of the Eastern Province, who were looked down upon by the Northern leadership as socially and culturally inferior, caused a setback to the LTTE`s political and operational standing in the Eastern Province.
One would have expected the revolt of the Eastern Tamils to have had a sobering effect on the Northern leadership. It did not. On the contrary, the Northern leadership of the organisation let loose a campaign of deniable assassinations and other terrorist strikes not only against those, who had joined the Eastern revolt, but also against governmental and non-governmental personalities, who were suspected by the Northern leadership of acting in complicity with the revolting Eastern elements.
The revolt of the Eastern elements and the tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004, did damage the conventional fighting capability of the LTTE, but it did not affect its capability for terrorist strikes not only in the Tamil-speaking Northern and Eastern Provinces, but also in Colombo. It continued eliminating its suspected opponents one after the other, without coming under any pressure from the international community.
The international community not only failed to act against the LTTE for its continued acts of terrorism while ostensibly continuing to adhere to the cease-fire agreement, it gave even impressions of pampering a brutal terrorist organisation. Unwarranted gestures such as Chris Patten, then in charge of foreign affairs in the European Union set-up, calling on Prabhakaran in April 2004, the interactions of senior diplomats and other leaders of Western and Japanese governments with the LTTE leaders and the relutance of the Norwegian monitoring mission to take cognisance of the transgressions of the law
and the cease-fire agreement by the LTTE only encouraged the latter in its resumption of the use of terrorism to achieve its objective.
The unwise action of the international community in treating the elected Sri Lankan government and a notorious terrorist organisation on par in the matter of the disbursement and utilisation of the international reconstruction assistance for the Tamils affected by the tsunami conveyed to the LTTE a wrong message that the international community had no stomach to act against it.
The inevitable result: The brutal assassinatiion of Mr Kadirgamar on August 12. Unless the international community now sits up and makes the LTTE pay a heavy price for its continued use of terrorism, more blood is likely to flow in Sri Lanka. Such action has to come in the way of the arrest and deportation of all LTTE leaders and sympathisers operating from sanctuaries in the Western countries, freezing the suspected bank accounts of the LTTE and its supporters, and action to ground and seize the commercial ships of the LTTE and against the clandestine arms procurement infrastructure of the LTTE in South-East Asia and East Europe.

| Yes the western governments should stop the flow of money to fascist LTTE and suspend their bank accounts under the UN resolution until they give up arms, stop killling civilians and respect to the diffrent oppenions. WE SHOULD STOP THIS TERROR VERY SOON. |

Kathirkamar was a Tamil, He cannot speak in tamil, but can speak and write in Singala

Everyone knows that Karuna has betrayed the Tamil cause and is now with the SLA and RAW who are against Tamils. Karuna knows fully well that he cannot come out in public - neither in Batticaloa nor in any foreign land. So Karuna will only exist in the romantic yarns penned by guys like D.B.S. Jeyaraj and B. Raman.

Stop the worst terrorist organisation in earth.
Kadrigamar is murdered, so are numerous others Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese. The World has been sitting of the fence looking passively on the LTTE atrocities. From time to time they are issuing press releases condemning the LTTE murders and human rights violations.
The press releases have had no impact on the dictator Prabakharan. He is probably using the press releases from India, The White House and the Kremlin as toilet paper. But is Prabakharan playing with fire? His days are numbered and he knows it. He hopes a new war can unite the Tamils behind him or give him a hero?s death. However this is a miscalculation. He will be remembered as a traitor and a terrorist by the Tamils. Just the same as the Germans today remember Adolf Hitler, a disaster for the Germans and the World.
If the US, Russia and India is serious about fighting terrorism they should do their utmost to crack down on the LTTE World Wide. First by giving intelligence information and if necessary assist with military force.
The LTTE has really made a mess for themselves. They have proved to the world they are terrorist only committed to terrorism. The LTTE do not have any mass following among the Tamils. The Tamil Diaspora is feed up of the extortion to finance the mad mans sick ambitions of a fascist state in Northern Sri Lanka. Prabakharan has no credibility any longer.
Kadrigamas ambitions of a World Wide terrorist listing of the LTTE can, if not the Sri Lankan politicians mess it up, can now become a reality. The funds that fuel the terrorism must be stopped. This is a peaceful measure that can be easily be obtained in the international political climate after the murder of Kadrigama.
The LTTE has never been weaker it is time to take action. The murder of Kadrigamar is probably the last nail in LTTE coffin. Carpe Diem. The President must use the blind eye when she is reviewing complaint from the LTTE running boy, Erik Solheim, about disarming the Karuna fraction. The people of Sri Lanka should also request the President to set a side her personal ambition of a Nobel Peace and instead set the interest of the people of Sri Lanka as the first priority on her agenda.
If not the EU take actions to ban the LTTE fundraising, the war against LTTE terrorism might come to Europe. It has been alleged some groups will take actions against the LTTE extortion of the Tamil Diaspora. The LTTE threats of bomb attacks in Europe and threats against individuals have angered many. Some are allegedly so feed up that they are ready to take action against the LTTE foreign leadership.

| Gun shots fired at Kadirgamar from a TAMIL HOUSE. Whatelse huh? Tamil people might have hired by LTTE do to this. We now know peace agreement is a joke. Somep people understood early but most people did not believe it. Kadirgamar was in the LTTE death list. That explains who did it. Most Tamil people supports LTTE in various countries for a world banned terrorist organization. Now at least they must stop giving funds to LTTE. We cannot do junk politics with LTTE. Even if we give the LTTE authority to control more and more, they going to kill all the leaders more and more good leaders of our country! They might have done this assasination thinking that Prabakaran can be the foreign minister. How we give to a such a rat that did not even come out since the TSUNAMI disaster. Prabakaran hate all SINHALESE and he cannot play fair roll in the government. When Sinhalese people carry TSUNAMI aid's to affacted areas, who steal the aids and try to buy weapons? LTTE. I have no idea why our leaders are so dumb enough to understand that LTTE is an organization that cannot be pet by us. Either LTTE must capture those who did it and hand over to the government, or we shall clean up all LTTE and leave pure TAMIL people. LTTE wants to suffer both their tamil people and sinhalese people. That is why they do this! Why Tamil people yield to an organization that do not support neiter Tamil nor Sinhalese people. Why? Word of LTTE must have gone by now! Think about it, what do you gain by supporting LTTE criminals who try make conlicts among Tamil and Sinhalese people? |

I have fought enough battles. ready to go again. these Tamils are begging all around the world(looking for citizenships)who ever civilized can be in our motherland,Sinhalese got nowhere to go but for Tamils everybody knows where their home is, in history we have won with their mad forefathers , in future the same

u should be ashamed to call yourself a Tamil. Regardless of his Race, Kadir was a good Sri Lankan and the LTTE is pissed with him because he spoke only the truth.
Dont think the mentality of a few pathetic LTTE supportering morons like you is the same as the mentality of all tamils. You nick also indicates what kinda mentality you are in. |

| You better worry about it. Run for the foreign minister yourself and see what happen to you? Do not try to safegurad LTTE. Kadirgamar did not deserve to die, do you deserve to die? LTTE is an organization act against the government, and it is terrorism. Do not be such a jerk to talk against Kadirgarmar as TAMIL person. We are not racists, but we are against LTTE (World Banned Child Abducting Terrorist ORG). Whole world knows it. Kadirgamar involved enough too much to be targeted by LTTE. LTTE likes to condemn everything while they secretly carrying on their mission of killing all the great leaders. U.S.A. itslef warns LTTE not to make troubles or else they will be wipe out LTTE! But LTTE have done mistakes and keep doing it. |

| Our soldires faught more than 20 years not to grow LTTE like this. Prasanna, terrorism is the root of assasination here. Because LTTE is terrorist organization, they did it the silent way. God123, can you run for foreign minister for me, you deserve what Kadirgamar desrve too. We can stay without worrying about this and tell it is normal in SRI LANKA until we also get killed by snipers. Our soldires almost ended terrorism and stupid RANIL agreed the peace without knowing the plan of LTTE. That gave more ammunition to LTTE to spread more and take all kinds of weapons and grow all over SRI LANKA. This is a situation as KU KLUX KLAN erupted in United States long time ago where they killed lot of people. At least I am glad if President Chandrika understand that petting LTTE is not the way to go. I do not think Ranil would even understand that. Because of the terrorism, we have assasination going on. The reason we can say because it is a work of LTTE. LTTE = TERRORISM. All Sinhalese and Tamils, other minority cultures and its people must abolish LTTE or we need to create another Land in the Indian ocean to go! |
