Nimal new leader of House

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva was appointed Leader of the House yesterday, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of the Minister Maithripala Sirisena.

The appointment was announced by the Speaker W. M. J. Lokubandara, when Parliament reconvened yesterday morning.

Speaker Lokubandara informed the house that the ruling, United People`s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) had appointed Minister Silva as the Leader of the House.

A two-day debate on the P-TOMS agreement is to be held on August 11 and 12 according to a decision taken at the party leaders` meeting held last week.

Venerable Athuraliya Ratana Thera, Parliamentary group leader of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) raised a question, in Parliament soon after it commenced business, regarding the killing of SP Charles Wijewardene, last Thursday in Jaffna, by a mob led by the LTTE. He asked what action the Government had taken to apprehend the killers..

Deputy Minister of Defence Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, in his reply said that government would bring those responsible for the murder of the high ranking police official before the court of law. He added a team of officials of the CID had commenced investigation in Jaffna to arrest the killers.
