Mobitel Eexpands to 300 GSM base stations

Mobitel (Pvt) Ltdlaunched its 300th GSM base station at Bellungala, Kadugannawa in 18 months since the inauguration of its GSM network.

Mobitel`s Chairman Anil Obeyesekere said that Mobitel`s expansion programme would provide benefits to customers including enhanced mobility through wider coverage and a greater range of services to its steadily growing customer base.

`The immediate goal of our expansion efforts is anticipated with continued improvement in service delivery.` stated Director Mobitel & CEO Sri Lanka Telecom,. Shuhei Anan, who was present at the launch. `This is in keeping with the company`s strategy of identifying and following our customers` needs as a friendly provider, by monitoring teledensity patterns` said Anan.

He further said that Mobitel has made a total commitment to its valued customers to expand the network to all relevant parts of the Island, both urban and rural, enabling wider accessibility while at the same time ensuring quality connections.

At the same event, Mobitel`s CEO, Suren Amarasekera said `this is an important milestone in our commitment to the delivery of a quality service while enhancing our renowned standards of customer care, and thus paving the way to ensure service quality`

Mobitel is an indigenous mobile services provider. 100% locally owned company. In January 2004, Mobitel launched its GSM network that is EDGE/GPRS enabled and designed to operate on dual bands. Mobitel`s GSM service saw an unprecedented growth of 300%. Mobitel`s investments to date in its GSM service offering totals over US$ 140 million and is set to increase the present capability of 300 GSM base stations to 600 GSM base stations and more than double Mobitel`s GSM network subscriber capacity and enhance its existing coverage to meet the growing demand. Mobitel recently pioneered a range of customised menu-driven over the air (OTA) value added services which enables the customer to enjoy hassle-free downloading of information without the inconvenience of having to remember a list of short codes. These services range from usage balance and billing details to sports and financial updates as well as a range of infotainment options. This service is even available whilst roaming.

Mobitel also provides an extensive roaming network across the globe with very attractive rates to all key destinations, and has the distinction of being the only network to offer pre-paid roaming to its subscriber base.
