`I promise to include the suggestions made by Maaduluwe Sobitha Maha Nayake Thero, in the economic programme to be implemented when I become the Executive President of Sri Lanka,` said leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe at a special felicitation ceremony on his being elected as a Vice-President of the International Democrat Union and also as President of the Asia Pacific Chapter of the same union.
The Maha Nayake Thera, in his address highlighted the need to establish true democracy which ensures that a creation of employment opportunities was not for UNPers but for the whole of Sri Lanka and that 70 percent of the population of the country who are farmers be assured of a fair price for their produce and cheap agricultural inputs so that cultivation is profitable. He said the farmer of the North and East, who produced potatoes, onions and chillies, as a profitable venture, be safeguarded from the dangers of an open economy and be victims of traders.
The Mahanayake thero said the present electoral system of voting at district level which helps only the powerful and the rich and prevents the poor from entering parliament should be suitably amended and more importantly because the system resulted in some electorate not having a representative.
He urged that every village be developed individually so that through the `Grama Rajya` the whole country gets developed and that the representative of the people live with the people whom he or she represents.
The Maha Nayake Thero further said that of Sri Lanka is to be developed, it can be done only through revolution in the spheres of politics and legal administration and the independent commissions must be fiercely independent and there should be no interference with them. The Public Service Commission, Police Commission, Bribery Commission and the Elections Commission must be truly independent.
UNP leader Wickremesinghe promised to include the above suggestions in his programme of economic development and further said that there was no problem with regard to the position of Prime Minister when the UNP leader is elected as President of the country. `The Deputy leader of the UNP, Karu Jayasuriya is the choice for the post of Prime Minister, there is no ambiguity a doubt about this decision`, Wickremesinghe said.
However since the appointment of the Prime Minister is based on the leadership of the majority party in parliament, the UNP will have to take a decision to obtain that majority.
Continuing he said that the honour bestrowed on him was not as Ranil Wickremesinghe but as the leader of the United National Party.
The need today was not to canvass for votes as the UNP Presidential candidate. This will come later. Today`s priority is to protect the sovereignty of the people and ensure that their right to elect a President of their choice was not denied, he said.
The UNP led Janabala Meheyuma provided an opportunity for the people to express their views in no uncertain terms. Today the second stage of having massive petition signed by millions of people will be commenced, he added.
The next step to be taken will be decided on within the next two or three weeks and the UNP will utilize peoples power to ensure that the Presidential election is held in 2005 as required by the constitution is no problem. Many times in the past, Sri Lanka has obtained assistance through the good office of the IDU, by way of election monitas in order to eliminate vote, he concluded.

Messrs. Kadiya,Muniraj,Pera,
In this predicament whom would you vote for? OR iS THERE A DIFFERENT LEADER you like and Why is that choice reasonable?
I could see that all 3 of you do not like UNP/Ranil's policies.
Please give us the alternative with valid reasons.
No point in blaming let's see if your blame game is valid.
Thank you

Thanks Muni,
Your wish is good and the reasons may be ovious.
But you have to tell us what is practical.
Sri lankan ,all in all will not elect Mr. Kadirgamar and the reasons are obvious.
Please give us a solid choice for leadership.
What I see is that all those who are blaming Ranil dont give us a reasonable alternative.
It would be naive of anyone to blame Ranil if they cannot give a practical solution.
Everyone, Please be focussed on the topic.

You said 'What I see is that all those who are blaming Ranil dont give us a reasonable alternative. '
:) :) My friend you are wayy Behind....
The reason they dont give a VIABLE alternative is because they dont have one. Its simple as that.
All Ranil has to do is keep his cool, focus on the issues like (cost of living, Tsunami Victims, economy, racial harmony), keep the momentum of the campaign going - and he will be President by the 23rd of November 2005. :)
Just becuase a DOG looks at the moon and Barks, the Moon is NOT going to fall down. The same way, all these insults are not going to have the slightest effect on the voter....
