PERA,

Thanks for copying the article by Thisaranee Gunasekara. I do not have any major contradictions about what she wrote, except for one thing. As I discussed with few others previously, the way out of this mess is Tamils getting rid of LTTE and Sinhalas getting rid of both the major parties, if they cannot get rid of their leaders who are currently giving in to Racist LTTE demands. The writer (fortunately) identifies the necessity of eradicating LTTE (with no problems), but the way she suggests to achieve the second step is not very appealing. What she is saying there is basically to form a broad Tamil alliance and to pump it with the support of the masses to a level where the Governments formed by two major parties cannot any longer listen only to the LTTE demands (correct me if I misinterpreted what she wrote).

In the first place, no one cannot form any effective broad Tamil alliance without destroying the LTTE (i.e. there is no point of having a massive public backing to such an alliance as long as they are not represented in the parliament). In effect, the second step cannot be implemented without achieving the first step. In contrary, first step (i.e. destroying LTTE) cannot be achieved as long as these two major parties are in power. For me this is nothing but a deadlock.

Secondly, there is nothing for the Sinhala community to do in her plan except waiting for Tamils to form that alliance.

But my point is, there is a relatively easy way to achieve this. Without worrying about the LTTE, Sinhalas (as the Majority) should first require to form a government which is not giving in to LTTE demands. Now, this is not something we cannot achieve. In fact, we can achieve this in three ways.

The hard and the most difficult way is taking a party like JVP (or JHU) to power by themselves (Now, you may have issues with both the parties, but let us not discuss those for the time being). This requires a massive public education and a media campaign and may consume good several years to ripe to an edible level.

The second method is hijacking an existing party in the same way Chandrika (with the help of Ravaya and Wasantha Rajah) hijacked SLFP. This also can be done. The advantage is one can easily by-pass educating general masses in this case.

The third or the most easiest way is to empower a party like JVP or JHU to a level where no other major party cannot form a government without them. This in deed have achieved to a certain level in the previous government though not worked well due to many reasons.

This is just the out line of very complex process to achieve the first step Thisaranee Gunasekara suggested. While achieving this, Sinhalas can also start winning Tamils to this general cause. This may take years to fulfill. But the bottom line is we should take all measures to block these governments giving more in to LTTE demands.

Mucha,
I agre with you 98%. I posted Tisaranee's article since I admire her writing skills and analysing power. That does not mean I agree with what she write. Her works are eye openers for everyone.

The following part is only between you and me only (Mucha and me Pera)Mr Fairplay, if we want your openion on this we shall ASK alright??

You know Mucha, during the 83 riots, JVP was instrumental in safeguarding the lives of Tamil students in the Universities. Few days ago LTTE has attacked the JVP office. UNP planned and executed the 83 riots. Now LTTE are the best buddies of INP and they attack JVP offices.

I invite you to see the irony .....

Cheers

PERA,

What you said in deed is an irony. In fact the whole Sri Lanka is an irony if not a tragedy.

BTW, the things you wrote about the 1983 took me somewhere else. This is very personal, but would not mind sharing it with a friend like you.

In 1983 my father was working for a government department and was recruited to the Essential Services (Athyawashya Seva). One of the duties he was given was to supply food and other necessities to the Tamil refugees sheltered in Government Schools. On certain occasions he was also asked to distribute the goods among refugees by himself as well. One day he accompanied me in his old Green Mitsubishi Jeep to help him with distributing certain stuff which at the time unknown to me. Our destination was Isipathana College in Havelocks. We had truck load of that unknown stuff at the back of the Jeep. Once reached there, he asked me to distribute it only to the women and not to men. As a kid I made real fun out of it and ended up giving it to all the women I met there including some just 5 years old.

It took me good 5 more years to realize that what I was given to distribute are nothing but Sanitary Napkins. Lots of things have happened after that. Now both of us know what we distributed. But to date, I have never raised it with my father.

Mucha,
A coin has two sides.
Thugs dominated the 83 riots and ordinary Sinhala people helped the Tamil victims.
Now we see thugs among the Tamils (at least according to Tamilnet, likes of the people who killed SP Wijewardene). As Sinhalese we must be happy and proud that no LTTE barbaric act could provoke Sinhalese now.

Those days majority of the Sinhalese were really unaware of the Tamil racism. Thanks to LTTE and the Tamil dispora, now we know the levels of Tamil racism too.

Earlier most of Sri Lankan institutions (both government and private) were dominated by Tamil professionals and intellectuals...thanks to LTTE, that is going down...

As Sinhala people, we must learn from LTTE mistakes.

Mr.Pera
LTTE has created two new professions for Tamils
1.Suicide bombers
2.Child solders

Now they are dreaming of becoming one of them. not doctors, engineers or Accountants because these professions are poorly paid, according to LTTE.

That is why you see very few educated tamils in Sri Lanka now

Abduction of IP Jeyaratnam: Abductions and arbitary arrests and extrajudicial killings must be condemned at the highest whoever committs it.
IP Jeyaratnam, a Tamil from Jaffna was a hardworking and patriot Police officer for the SL government for at least two decades.

He had arrested and tortured hundreds of innocent Tamils, along with LTTE cadres and supporters in the Capital.Ofcourse he arrested some real LTTE cadres in Capital.

Some were even killed and went missing till now. There are evidence of some Tamil youths who are permanently disabled, who are like vegetables.

There are also some girls who were raped by Police during interrogation and chose to join LTTE when released.

Its almost impossible to speak to any Tamil to get the facts due to fear.

How many Tamil bodies were dumped in the KELANIYA river over night?
He was also carrying out his vengence against LTTE. He escaped Jaffna in the last bust to escape LTTE ten years ago. ITs alleged his brother a Policeman was killed by LTTE in an attack.

His actions as a IP in the Police were appalling, not just him the majority in the Police did the same. There were women who were tortured through their genitiles, intimacyually harrased by his team in cells and safe houses in around Capital.

Every Police officer is expecgted to behave in a professional manne. Being fair and bringing to books the suspects or the offenders. Its the Judicial, courts that take its responsibility of judgement. But majority in the SL police are like IP Jeyaratnam who are drunk with power and impotent to catch the real LTTE fighters or the offenders quench their thirst on innocent Tamils.
They use all forms of human rights violations.

People would feel sad for the innocent family of officers like these but not for people like IP Jeyaratnam for abuse of power.
Even the GOSL to whom he was loyal and hardworker, has abondoned him, may be because he is a Tamil officer.

Let's pray that he is released and faces trail with other offenders in the Police.
