Customers who do their shopping in the Pettah, First Cross Street, for electronic and electrical items are exposed to being tricked due to counterfeit items being available almost at every sales outlet. An `Island` reader who had purchased few Sony rechargeable batteries, a few weeks ago, found that the batteries were not rethining the charge. When he tried to return the item, it was not accepted because of a slight scratch mark they said.Further investigations have revealed that items such as batteries and remote control switches are brought in large quantities as `baggage` item and released into the market, with no controlling authority checking such items. They are of low quality and not covered by a guarantee. `What is the protection customers have from being duped by such traders who cheat unsuspecting a customers` he asked in despair.
