Wesley crush Royal 27-0
Sunday, 31 July 2005 - 5:03 AM SL Time

Wesley following on from their (34-8) win over Ananda last week maintained the winning streak when they crushed Royal 27-0, in a one-sided Singer Inter-School rugby match played at Sugathadasa Stadium on Friday.

The winners who led 7-0 at half time made up the score from two converted tries, two tries and a penalty goal, to which the losers failed to reply during the 60 minutes of play.

Wesley last week`s win against Ananda was no flash in the pan as they ran down four unanswered tries and could have easily added to that tally, but for faulty ball handling in the first half.

Royal amply demonstrated they have not recovered from a morale shattering (5-20) reverse to S.Thomas` last week, and on current form will be rank outsiders to retain the Bradby Shield against Trinity next month.

For Wesley right wing Niranjan Wickremarathne stood out with a brace of tries, while scrum half Samantha Lakshan and reserve scrum half Chanaka Peters also had a touchdown apiece, with full back Yasas Nonis kicking the penalty.

Wickremarathne set the trend for Wesley going for first its try in the 28th minute from a fluent third phase three quarter move, while he converted his own five pointer to give a 7-0 half time lead.

In the 46th minute scrum half Lakshan dashed to score following a good forwards build up, while full back Nonis kicked a 20-metre penalty 10 minutes later to give Wesley a 17-0 cushion lead.

During the latter stages of the second half, Royal`s defence really cracked, and Wesley winger Wickremarathne scored his second try, a solo effort, a minute from full time.

Substitute half back Peters had his touchdown in stoppage time, to round off a satisfying day at the office for the lads from Campbell Park.
