Mahinda will romp home victor - Nimal
Saturday, 30 July 2005 - 4:02 AM SL Time

GOVERNMENT Spokesman Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva yesterday expressed full confidence that SLFP Presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse would emerge the winner at the next Presidential Election.

The SLFP`s Central Committee unanimously adopted Rajapakse`s name as its Presidential candidate while Minister Anura Bandaranaike was nominated as the party`s Prime Ministerial candidate, he told the weekly Cabinet press briefing.

He said Rajapakse`s appointment as the SLFP Presidential candidate clearly demonstrated the solidarity within the SLFP. This is also a good answer to certain UNP backed media who continuously attempted to highlight imagined rifts within the SLFP.

De Silva said the SLFP challenged the UNP to nominate their shadow Prime Minister instead of harping on the Presidential candidate of the SLFP.

The UNP has so far failed to announce their shadow Prime Minister. However the SLFP took a political decision nominating both Presidential and Prime Ministerial candidates showing stability within the party.

He said the SLFP is a strong political party which can face any election at any time.

Responding to a question about the Presidential Election, de Silva said the country`s laws cannot be changed by making various statements.

The sole power to announce the date of the Presidential Election is vested in the Elections Commissioner. However, the Elections Commissioner should also take this decision in accordance with the Constitution, he said.

`If the Elections Commissioner takes a decision violating the rules and regulations of the Constitution, his decision can be challenged in Court. In this situation, the decision given by the Court will have to be accepted as the valid and final decision in this regard,` he said.
