Journalists threatening the country`s security: President
Wednesday, 27 July 2005 - 3:16 AM SL Time

President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday accused the private media and particularly defence correspondents of exposing sensitive military information in a manner that harmed national security.Addressing armed services commanders the Police Chief and other senior officers at a conference held at the BMICH last evening to brief them on tsunami reconstruction and the need to implement the P-TOMS agreement, an angry President told the journalists from the private and state media to leave before she briefed the security commanders.

The President said she had asked the journalist to go because they might disclose more military secrets and she charged that 75% of the media were supporting the UNP.

She singled out a senior journalist in her attack.

The President said the country needed peace and as a first step there must ne rebuilding of the tsunami devastated areas. She warned she would take tough action against any extremist elements who were trying to block her peace efforts.

The President said extensive discussions were conducted before signing the P-TOMS agreement with the LTTE and she expected full co-operation from the armed services in implementing the agreement.

Chief of Defence Staff and Navy Commander Daya Sandagiri, Army Commander Shantha Kottegoda, Air Force Commander Donald Perera, IGP Chandra Fernando and other senior security forces personnel were present.

Why do you brief commanders on security matters in a conference at BMIC any way? In the first place there should not have been any reporters if confidential information to be discussed and again why at BMICH. If information is leaked out then it is not the fault of the reporters. We do not need competent authority again as the JRJ and Premadasa time but military need to do their job as well as CBK to keep her mouth shut not discussing national security details in a conference addressing Tsunami reconstruction .

Jayampath,

Thanks for brining in a nice Sinhala saying. Have not heard of that phrase for ages!

Appuwa became king in 1950s though. Look at the mess we are in. Hopefully Sri Lankans dont elect any more from Appuwa family!

Dear Hon: Madam,

It is not a possibility to close down all private media and all the government media. You are the head of the state. You and your government have the peoples mandate to govern the country. What are you talking? What are you doing? If this report is correct, What is your level you orderd all the media persons to go out from that conference hall after inviting them there?

I think the organizers invited them because it is not a secret security council meeting. It is a PTOM awreness meeting. On the other hand I saw an news paper artice few monthe ago, our opposition leader Ranil told to the tsunami victims at a public rally at down south, to hit and chase away if any government surveyors or officers come to demarcate the hundred meter buffer zone. These guys cant control there emotions when they surrounded by their yesmen. There is no difference between you guys and Dr. Mervin Silva. Next time it is better to vote for Dr. Mervin Silva for the Presidensy. These so-called peoples leaders suited to govern....sad to say only for Sri Lanka.

I have become more optimistic about these issues.

Amidst all the crap said by Mad-dam CBK, is it not nice to hear the fact that we still have a NATIONAL SECURITY and certain sensitive MILITARY information to safe guard from the enemy. Is it not nice to here that at least 25% of the media are still not supporting UNP.

Look at the positive side of this.

When politicians and so called party leaders are not acting in a faithful manner, people have the tendancy of start believing what the media says whether it is truth or false.

Generally 75% of the people are totally unaware what is happening around them to the exact situation. They just hear or read what is spelled-out by the media and then form an opinion according to thier political liking.

There is no difference of the people living in north-east and southern part of the island with regard to the above fact.

Poor people...

Ok Now I understand. We had the CFA with the wrong group. So all these killings must have committed by journalists. That's why LTTE was repeatedly denying the allegations. At least our Madam found it before it is too late, how lucky we are?. We must sign an MoU with 'Nidahas Majjiya Viyaparaya' (free media movement).

CBK,
what about the threat by you the president of the state, to the country's security?? You have made the SL soldiers so demotivated that many of them are resigning. and your single handed decisions have driven the military officials nuts..

and what about all the dumb things that you have done, just to get some praise from the international community??? You have made the whole country a complete chaos. and if you are thinking that your son will some day be like Rahul Gandi that's wrong damn it!...please after you leave the presidency do n't try to involve in Sri Lanka's politics any more...
