Armed patrons thwart police raid on nightclub
Monday, 25 July 2005 - 8:17 AM SL Time

The Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) said that Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva`s son Malaka and another person believed to be a bodyguard pulled out pistols during a police raid on Taj Samudra around midnight Saturday. They had been among the group of persons who clashed with the raiding party.

Mervyn Silva defended his son. `He is not involved in the fight,` he told The Island. He accused the law enforcement officers of targeting his son. `There is not an iota of truth in what police say.`

President Chandrika Kumaratunga recently made him a Deputy Minister, a post he vacated several months ago following accusations of his involvement in an attack on the Clancy`s.

`One of the unruly youth attacked a plainclothesman and gashed his lip,` a senior police headquarters based official said. `They pulled out weapons and threatened to open fire.

They forced us to leave the club,` he acknowledged.

`We did not make an attempt to arrest them. A shooting match would have caused casualties,` he said. According to him there had been over 150 persons including many scantily clad girls, at the MKOP at the time of the raid.

Police Chief Chandra Fernando ordered a crackdown on night clubs and karaoke bars after the horrific killing of 19-year-old fashion designer student Alanska Yvonne Jonsonn on the 19th floor of the plush Royal Park condominium at Rajagiriya on July 1.

Caroline, 17, had admitted that she and her murdered sister were aware of the suspect Shramantha Jayamaha`s dependence on narcotics. This transpired during the magisterial inquiry.

Speaking to The Island hours before his men raided Taj Samudra, Fernando said that they would go all out against narcotics dealers.

Saturday`s raid was the first targeting MKOP after SSP Ananda Hettiarachchi replaced Pujitha Jayasundera as Director PNB. Jayasundera has been appointed DIG, Colombo.

`Our raid triggered a violent reaction from the youth,` a senior police headquarters official said.

About two dozen plainclothesmen led by a Chief Inspector had moved in around 11. 30 p.m. on Saturday. `We were looking for narcotics, particularly ecstasy,` the officer said, adding that the policemen and a group of MKOP patrons exchanged blows. But once they pulled out pistols we had to leave,` the officer said.

`We had a search warrant,` another officer said, adding that PNB officers lodged complaints with Fort Police. Colombo police is expected to record the statement of Malaka Silva. `We are trying to identify the youth carrying weapons,` he said.

DIG Pujitha Jayasundera yesterday directed ASP Champika Siriwardene to investigate the incident. Police yesterday recorded several statements including from the staff at MKOP and Officer-in-Charge of the PNB.

Colombo police is expected to take Malaka Silva into custody. Police are trying to establish whether the bodyguard accompanying Malaka was one of the personnel assigned to Deputy Minister`s security from the Ministerial Security Division (MSD).

I don't understand is why these politicians encourage their children to behave in this manner. This is not the first time we have seen this sort of behaviour. Parents have the responsibility of showing their children the correct path. I don't think my father would have defended me like this even if he is the president.

Does Colombo or Kandy need all these western style Night clubs which have been runing our young people by getting involved into drugs and gangs fightings like in western films.

It is true that some major Hotels in Colombo prefer to have nightclubs just to attract western tourists to listen our local music as well as some western music for their relasation, of course Hotels can earn more .

However, the government should not allow any private night clubs only without Hotels even for the Sri Lankans or Sri Lankan expatriates.or some clubs should be allowed under strict government control applicable at any time.

Now all these already remaining clubs in Sri Lanka are well known for the drug business, imported prostitues or call girls from foreign countries like Hong-Kong,vietnam,Eastern European countries like (former russian federations like Ukranian ).

If we can close down all these notorious night clubs immediately a good solution can be found very easily.

Mervin Silva's son is like the Night Rider...where ever there is trouble he is there...like father like son...and most of the politicians sons are like this(anuruddha R,Mahinda W,SB,etc...)

First of all, there should be strict guide lines on the age limit...though the rule is in place at the moment no one is currently go by it...they just enter based on contacts...and
Quote-Speaking to The Island hours before his men raided Taj Samudra, Fernando said that they would go all out against narcotics dealers...
Unquote

Police will have some real trouble in dealing with these narcotics dealers...cos i m pretty sure that most of them might have very close connections to the corupted politicians in the country...

However, though it too late, we must appreciate this raidings by the police...BETTER LATE THAN NEVER...

This is a case of where the rich and the famous in Sri Lanka carry weapons taking the law into their own hands. In Sri Lanka, when one has the political upper hand, drugs, abuse, weapons, and murder is second nature...and sometimes even easy to get away with!

Why did the Police leave?? Instead they should have taken control of the situation at that very moment and seized the weapons. If they thought that had they stayed there would have been casualties, are they saying that they have no control of a crime scene? That's pretty pathetic being the Police! By leaving, the Police proved how powerless they are and how scared they are of the politicians who abuse the power! This retarded attitude is the main reason why Sri Lanka fails to prosper...sorry but I had to say it!

First of all, the government is a formed with some bunch of corrupted and anti social elements. The second issue is, unfortunately some of the security forces are politically motivated. They supposed to be independent, which has never happened in the history of SL.

As a result, the younger generation is thinking that the corrupted way is the only way to survive.

On top of all, it is a (so called) Buddhist country (luckily god Buddha is not living in the era.), where all these things are happening.

King...i think you have made a minor mistake,...please let me correct that...
in your last sentence you have typed as god buddha...it has to be LORD BUDDHA (hope you have not done it intentionally- though it may does not mean anything to you, for we buddhist it means a lot, as we do not believe in gods)...

hope you will take it in the right spirit...

Who are these MSD Security personell present at the night club who had drawn their weapons against their colleagues ?

On whose orders ?

They must be charged aiding & abetting a riot, attempted to kill by shooting, conniving with peddling in Narcotics.

They must be remanded forthwith, charged, sent to jail & dismissed from service.

Mr. Ananda Hettiarachchi, SSP Narcotics, wake up & take stern action. Show your mettle decipline you maintained at the SLPC. Do not cow down to these political thugs & rid the police of political stooges.
