Wednesday, 20 July 2005 - 5:28 AM SL Time

An inaugural cricket competition between Asia and Africa will be held next month in South Africa, officials announced on Tuesday.

The matches have been accorded official status by the International Cricket Council, according to Afro-Asian Cricket Cooperation chairman Jagmohan Dalmiya.

The three-match one-day series between an Asia XI and an Africa XI will start at the Supersport Park Centurion in Pretoria on August 17 and will be followed by games in Kingsmead in Durban on August 20 and 21.

Both continental associations have announced selectors to finalise the teams.

The Asian Cricket Council has named Majid Khan (Pakistan), Ravi Shastri (India) and Siddath Wettimuny (Sri Lanka), with a Bangladeshi selector to be added.

The Africa Cricket Association has nominated Mike Proctor (South Africa), Psyche Nkala (Zimbabwe) and Tom Tikolo (Kenya) as selectors.
