LTTE is our people, not invaders - DEW
Monday, 18 July 2005 - 7:53 AM SL Time

Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Government Representative on the P-TOMS Apex body, DEW Gunasekara says bringing the LTTE to the negotiating table is Sri Lanka`s problem and not that of the British or the Americans.

He also said the concerns expressed by the Americans that P-TOMS was dominated by the LTTE were of not much concern to the government, though it was an internal policy of the United States. However, he said the US was supportive of the peace process.

In an interview on YATV/TNL HARDLINE programme last night, Gunasekara said `It doesn`t matter what position they take. The LTTE is our own people. They are not invaders or foreigners. So leave aside the Americans and the British. We must take every possible step to bring them closer, that is our job not that of the Americans or British.` Defending the Norwegian facilitators from criticism leveled against them, including by Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, Gunasekara said `The Norwegians were selected by the Government. Proposals came from India, Britain and Norway.

The LTTE objected to India, the Government objected to Britain and they had to choose a smaller country like Norway.

You cannot get 100 % unanimity in this issue. It is impossible.`

However, Gunasekara pointed out that the main role of the international community was to bring pressure on the LTTE to come to the negotiating table for talks.

Yes, LTTE is our people, but to get a deal for peace acceptable to both, replae the norwegians with Finns. See the article below how Indonesia problem was resolved. We can do the same! Come on LTTE give up arms and assimilte in to the civilian life. We sinhalese are willing to a democratic federal policy. Let the regions govern them selves democratically. We dopn;t care you call the regiosn Ealam or what ever the people decide. Insisting on a separate Ealam will not lead you and us no where!

HELSINKI: Indonesia and Aceh rebels will sign a truce on August 15 after agreeing yesterday a formula for ending the 30-year-old conflict that has cost 12,000 lives in the province devastated by last December?s tsunami.

Jakarta and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) initialled a deal on how to disarm the guerrillas, withdraw Indonesian troops, monitor a ceasefire and reintegrate the rebels socially and politically. It will be formally signed in Helsinki next month.

?It is a historic moment, we finally reach a peaceful settlement that has been longed for so many years by the people of Aceh and by the people of Indonesia,? Indonesian Information Minister Sofyan Djalil told Reuters at the talks in Finland. ?Society can live peacefully and we can rebuild Aceh after it has been destroyed by the tsunami,? he said.

In the devoutly Muslim province of 4 million people on the northern tip of the island of Sumatra, which has long history of revolt against Jakarta and Dutch colonial rule, there was little patience with the political details of the talks. ?I don?t know anything about negotiations. What I want is just peace in which I can work and my children can grow,? said Jamaluddin, who builds wells in the local capital Banda Aceh. ?I have lost four of my eight children. I have to work from morning to late at night. I don?t have time to support any side,? he said.

GAM said they had taken a chance on the deal with Jakarta ?because we want to give the people of Aceh a chance to rebuild after the devastating tsunami and to provide them with the opportunity to determine their own internal affairs?.

The agreement sets a tight schedule for decommissioning GAM fighters and withdrawing Indonesian troops. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told reporters in Jakarta his government would offer the guerrillas an amnesty and scale down its military and police presence once the deal is inked.

It may be true that the origin of the LTTE are from the same community. But LTTE murderers are no longer a part of SL. Still our politiccos have not learn a proper lesson.Keep on feeding even after the tiger bites the feeding hand.

At last a politician is saying something sensible. DEW is a true lefty unlike the pseudo lefties JVP.

Pera,
The cancer in Sri Lankan society is the group of people who hold the views you hold. Total exenteration of you and your kind from the body cavity of Sri Lanka will in one stroke cure all the ills of Sri Lanka.

You are the cancer not the LTTE.
