Inquiries should be held in all compliants of minor offences made daily, within twenty four hours; the police should be considered as a friend of the public and it is essential that there should be cordial relationship between the public and the police, said the newly-appointed senior Superintendent of the Gampaha Police Division, R. P. S. K. Rajapaksha. He was addressing the officers in charge of the Eleven Police Stations in the Gampaha Police Division on the occasion of assuming duties in his new post.
`This relationship will help greatly in the prevention of crime, and information given by the public to the police about illegal activities in rural areas will also help to establish a favourable situation in the villages, he said.
SSP Rajapaksha added that he had already informed all officers in-charge of police stations about the necessity of taking immediate steps to make inquiries regarding minor offences.
He also informed that residents living in the Gampaha Police Division, that if there were any anti-social activities in their neighbourhood, they could inform him on telephone or by a letter. They could give the information anonymously or by their own names to the direct numbers 033-2222228 or 033 2222222, he told the residents.
