Ruvi,

Though i do not accept such behavior at all, but it is common in most of the western countries also. It may be not in China cos most of the people use public transport to travel long distances only(according to what i have heard). in europe there are some funny ads has also being done based on this vulgar behavior.

It is a fact that women in Sri Lanka are harrassed sexualy every where. Sexual harrassment you find in each and every country in the world. But not to that extent as in Sri Lanka and India.

Two things we can undersand from this mentalilty.first thing, men are sexually frustrated or second they consider women as cheap.

A solution for the first reason is red light street as practised many countries in the world. For the second we need a broader approch to educate men. This should include self respect for themselves first( a man who does nt respect himself will not respect others) many others like importance of family life and importance of women in the society.

DumindaK,

I partially agree with you...but buddy considering our culture, there is no way that we can accept the streets that you mentioned... and even though those are in place as you sugest...still there ll be people who will continue with these vulger activities...and dumindaK do you think even now it is difficult to find brothels in SL...to my knowledge there are so many places , and some even run by high rank officials...

and the other thing is unlike in India (in some parts-of course again according to what i have heard about india) SLans treat their women extremely well(despite some small incidents here and there whcich is common even in european countries ) and thats a fact.so I can not accept your argumnt at all...
But I storngly agree that we should include about sexuality in our education system...which is not in place at the moment...

We have a closed society, but it has to change gradually. and as you said red light area are already there unofficially. so what is the problem of making it officialy?

one more thing I forgot to mention in the previous reply is that our women have to be more aggressive towards men. Many men sexually harrasse a woman because they know there is no reaction from the woman. so they are not scared. Suppose I stared at a woman in europe, she will immidiatly turn and ask me 'what is wrong with you'. But in sri Lanka she will look down and walk slowly as if she is guilty. So men keep on doing what they want.

Tamchboy, I dont need to go to a doctor dude, but when we open red light streed in Sri Lanka, I can guess, you will be the first one to be in the line.??????????

I think it is high time the Government decides to open up a 'red light street' as in India and other Western Countries. There are many MANIACS in Colombo and other areas who are involved in in child rapes and gang rapes.
At least having 'a free area' would enable these guys to
'burst out' without any hindrance. Reading a Sinhala News Paper would reveal the rapes and illicit sex going around the Country.

Don't you think sexual harassment, rape etc. are too complex to be solved by opening 'red light' areas? The perverts and rapists may take a walk down 'red light' areas but will it have any effect on sexual harassment or rape? Guys who look for cheap sex in Colombo don't need any such areas because sex workers are easy to spot in Colombo streets.

As in finding any solution, one has to identify the cause of the problem first. I think the primary cause is a steep fall in moral values which is due to lack of religious education and the cultural invasion through movies, TV and the internet. A few years ago, you wouldn't see young girls and boys even holding hands in public. Today, you can see them smooching in public with nary a care.

Look at the way girls and women dress now? Even a saint will be tempted by the tight fitting pants/skirts/T shirts and blouses. Such provocative dresses stir the baser instinct in man. How can you blame the man if the woman makes herself look so cheap?

These are just two reasons that come to mind but there are others too

Aritha Spice and sk63 are back !

Welcome folks !

I am so totally, absolutely, irrevocably, bellyachingly opposed to police action to deprive us of our legitimate pursuit of adventure and instant gratification.

We need a constitutional change for this!!

Prostitution is supposed to be the oldest profession in the world, I think it should be legal for the following reasons:

These girls get more abused working underground.
The government is giving-up on a large source of tax revenue.
The government is exposing itself to large medical risk as it has no way of controlling STD or Aids.
Underground sex trade also creates a environment for organized crime.
