Venezuela donates US$ 6.2 million for tsunami housing

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela William Izarra called on Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar to confirm the donation of US$ 6.2 million for the Sri Lanka Tsunami Relief Fund for the construction of 1000 houses for tsunami affected people. These houses are to be constructed in a location to be determined by the Government of Sri Lanka.

The Venezuelan Vice Foreign Minister said the funds had been collected by the people of Venezuela as a symbol of their feeling of solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka. The fund was initiated by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

The Venezuelan Vice Minister also expressed the hope that a Venezuelan diplomatic mission will be established in Colombo soon. He indicated that Venezuela would like to have an adviser visit Sri Lanka to see the progress of the construction of houses as well as to discuss details of the opening of a diplomatic mission in Colombo.

Thanking the Vice Foreign Minister for the donation, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar observed it was the largest donation from a Latin American country towards tsunami relief in Sri Lanka, and said it was a notable combination of state and people`s action.

Minister Kadirgamar welcomed the suggestion that Venezuela might open a diplomatic mission in Sri Lanka soon, and pointed out that Sri Lanka and Venezuela meet in a number of international forums where they share views on several issues of common interest to developing countries.


Both sides also agreed on the need to explore ways and means of expanding trade relations between the two countries.

Secretary to the President, W. I .S. Karunaratne who was present at the meeting handed over a letter from President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga addressed to President Hugo Chavez expressing her appreciation for the donation.

Additional Secretary (Political Affairs) of the Foreign Ministry Geetha de Silva also participated at the meeting.
