Muslims yet to challenge P-TOMS
Monday, 11 July 2005 - 7:20 AM SL Time

While the JVP and the JHU have filed cases in courts against the P-TOMS signed between the government and the LTTE, Muslim parties which initially opposed the mechanism are yet to take legal action against it.

National Unity Alliance (NUA) General Secretary Cegu Isadeen told the Daily Mirror yesterday they were still contemplating on taking legal action against the P-TOMS.

A decision had been taken at a meeting held in Akkaraipattu on July 2 to educate the party organizers and stalwarts in the area regarding the P-TOMS. NUA leader Ferial Ashraff had also attended the meeting.

Mr. Isadeen said fundamental rights of Muslims had been violated by this mechanism. 'Muslims are a separate community with their own political entity.

Before signing the P-TOMS, Norwegian Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen took the President`s message to LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan to seek the possibility of giving Muslims signatory status in the mechanism as a separate community. Thamilselvan had declined to accept the Muslims as a separate community as defined in the Ceasefire Agreement signed between the UNP and the LTTE in 2002,' he said.

He said that they would go to the Supreme Court to seek redress, as the Muslims were the worst affected by the tsunami.

'If the court says no, we will have no option other than talking to the LTTE. If they are willing to accommodate the needs and aspirations of Muslims on an equal basis, then we will join their struggle to win the rights of the entire North'East people,' he said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress National Organizer K.A. Baize said his party had not yet contemplatedon taking legal action against P-TOMS.

He said the Muslim community however felt it had been betrayed by the Norwegian facilitators. Referring to their last week`s meeting with foreign ambassadors, he said those diplomats pleaded with them to accept the P-TOMS.

Asked whether they accepted the Muslim concerns, he answered in the affirmative.

As it is understood the real effects of tsunami tormented most of the eastern and southern parts of srilanka as well as some parts of north. It is really upsetting to imagine how the muslim community was left out of P Toms. The time has arrived to stand for the rights of muslim people Mr.HAKEEM, Ms Ashraff.

Dear MUSLIMS,

This should make it clear that you CANNOT find any KING SENARATHs among Norwegians, among LTTEers or among these Pseudo-Sinhalese Leaders of major Parties. I believe some of the Muslims Organization are heading the correct direction, but you need to go there with one heart.

What can you expect from a barbaric organization who does not even recognize you as a separate race.

May ALLAH look after you all?!

Muslims should oppose JM/P-TOMS as it is. Some Muslims are talking about their representation, but it is not the matter they must oppose this as it badly affects the defence of our motherland.

Nowadays Muslim leaders do not come forward as real leaders. We feel that they try to fish in troubled waters without getting involved in conflicts. Some years back in a Daily Paper-letters to the editor column in Sri Lanka a Muslim guy expressed his views about the LTTE/GOSL war saying that Muslims need not support the GOSL as this is a fight between LTTE(Tamils) and GOSL.What cowards?
