Ganga leads the way with ton
Saturday, 9 July 2005 - 7:03 AM SL Time

Skipper Daren Ganga stroked a fine 109 as West Indies `A` scored 277 for 5 wickets at close of the first day`s play of their third and final four-day unofficial Test cricket match against Sri Lanka `A` at P. Sara Stadium on Thursday.

West Indies `A,` who were put into bat, dominated the day with the experienced Ganga leading the way. The Caribbeans played with a new-look side with seven players, who played in the second four-day game at Colts grounds, joining the senior squad.

New openers, Lindl Simmons and Sihan Maraj failed to lay a good foundation.

When the total reached 25, Maraj (5) was sent back to the pavilion as wicket keeper Jayawardena held on to a fine catch off the bowling of paceman Zoysa. Skipper Ganga joined Simmons, and they added 36 runs for the second wicket. Simmons was out for 38 (five fours and a six) which came off 68 balls in 93 minutes. He was well caught by Farveez Maharoof off new paceman Dilhara Lokuhettige and West Indies were 61 for 2 wickets. At lunch they were 92 for 2 wickets.

However, the experienced Daren Ganga and Marlon Samuels repaired the innings. Ganga who reached his fifty with a six off Suraj Mohammed, played a responsible innings. His fifty came off 80 balls in 95 minutes, with eight fours and a six. Ganga, who was unfortunately out for 99 in the first four-day game at Dambulla, completed his century with a single off Mohammed. He added valuable 114 runs for the third wicket with Samuels. Samuels gave a good support to Ganga, but he was run out for 34 just before tea. Russal Arnold`s fine fielding at leg slip brought about Samuel`s downfall when the total reached 175.

At tea West Indies were 193 for three, wickets with Ganga unbeaten on 101 while Dave Bernard was 7 not out.

Ganga continued his innings after tea, but he was unable to stay long as Maharoof struck in his third spell and Ian Daniel took a fine catch at first slip. Ganga fell 35 minutes after tea. Ganga was finally out for 109, which came in 193 balls in 231 minutes with nine fours and a six. The total reached 212 for 4. Two new players, Daniel Bernard and Darren Sammy added a further 33 runs in a fifth wicket stand.

When the total reached 255, Sammy was out for 24. He was caught and bowled by leg spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon.

Dave Bernard, who was dropped at nine by Sajeewa Weerakoon off his own bowling, remains on 41 with four boundaries with Richard Kelly on 13 not out at close. They added 22 runs for the sixth wicket.

Sri Lankan `A` skipper used six bowlers, but none of them got results. Zoysa, Maharoof, Lokuhettige and Weerakoon took one wicket each. However, Sri Lankan `A` maintained a good bowling rate.

Sri Lanka `A` brought in two more national players in Farveez Maharoof and T. M. Dilshan along with Ian Daniel, Dilhara Lokuhettige and Suraj Mohammed. They replaced Michael Vandort, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Dilhara Fernando, Malintha Gajanayake and Gayan Wijekoon.
