Dear Master Irshad,
Please read the following article appeared in Daily News 19/8/2002.
This boy is NOT from CIS but from Ananda College Maradana!

Sri Lankan student makes history in USA

It is not everyday that Sri Lankans are exalted for their achievement abroad, but given the rarity of such occurrences, the few cases are certainly worth our acclaim. Rasika Wickramasinghe is a Sri Lankan student studying in the United States.

He has made history by becoming the first foreign student to gain admission to the elite Medical Scientist Training Program of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, Johns Hopkins is the most prestigious name in American medicine celebrated for its cutting edge research and quality of clinical training. It is the birthplace of countless novelties in medicine and research. It goes as no surprise, therefore, that it is dubbed the nickname 'the Mecca of Medicine' by the American public.

Given the quality of this institution, gaining admission to this school of medicine with an admission rate of less than 0.1% is a dream-come-true for any American student.

But if gaining admission to Johns Hopkins was his only feat, the achievement is only marginally worth mentioning. Instead, Rasika enters Johns Hopkins as the first non-American in the world to receive both his MD and PhD degrees with full funding for the duration of his training. The funding for his training originates from a prestigious merit-based fellowship awarded by Merck Research Laboratories, a pharmaceutical giant in the USA.

On the request of the MD/PhD program at Johns Hopkins, Merck agreed to support Rasika's education, and granted $500,000 as the total cost for his education for eight years. This fellowship is the first of its kind to be awarded by Merck with no future obligation on the recipient's part.

Rasika is an old boy of Ananda College, Colombo, where he obtained 4 A's in his A-Levels. He qualified for admission to the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Colombo, but decided instead to pursue his education in the US in molecular biology.

His impeccable academic record in Sri Lanka made him an attractive candidate to many top-rated universities in the USA including Harvard, Stanford and Cornell. He decided to go to Stanford University, on a full-scholship funded by Genentech, a biotechnology company in the USA, which provided $40,000 per year for his four year education.

Rasika is the son of Dr. and Mrs. H. T. Wickramasinghe, former Head of Department of Paediatrics at Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, Kotte. Dr. Wickramasinghe is now working as the Head of the Department of Paediatrics in RIPAS Teaching Hospital in Brunei Darussalam and honorary senior lecturer in paediatrics at the university of Queensland, Australia.

Irshad,

though the question was asked from dumindaK let me answer to that...though i m bit confused by your mentality...
i'll give a well known figure in SL...
Dr.Abayasingha (curently at the science faculty of Col Uni-head of mathematics div)...he has taken his MSC from Harvard...and if you want more, the list i can send you through an email...cos i m not willing to waist this column to prove nonsense like that...

And what we care about is the person who comes out of the particular educational institute, not the institute he studied...cos its to do with the ability of the person to change him self accordingly and to gain knowledge and to build acceptable personality for him self...

Please don't be confused regarding my stance.
I am proud to say that I am a Sri Lankan, but I don't like people who point fingers at International Schools and Western Culture for every bad and noticeble incident that takes place in Colombo and it's suburbs.

Dear Master Irshad,
When you go abroad for heigher studies (Im sure thats what you want to do in future) you will see thousands of Sri Lankas with very humble begginings has reached to the pinnacle of their chosen field. They have had their primary and secondary education (free of charge) in our motherland. They are professionals and well respected by their colleagues.
Some of those people rerurn to Sri Lanka. Most of our academics in local Universities have PhDs from very good Universities of the world. They work very silently under very poor conditions. No one notices or appriciates them.
Foreigners do not mind if U are from CIS or Pinnawala Central College. For them, we all are Sri Lankans. Finally Im happy that CIS has taught U to accept and respect the Facts of life.
Thanks

First of all let me tell you that I am supporting the inernational schools in sri lanka. But I asked this question to separete truth from manipulation. I read posting of many people from this school but unfortunatly I am not really impressed with them. some even dont have basic quality of respecting others views and asking moderator to modify their messages and see them as scrap. That clearly shows that they dont want to lisen to other people views. Other people should talk what they want.A kind of disrespect to human beings. And their understanding is far away from the reality. That is why I ask this question to show them the reality.

I have visualized who can be a CIS student( he is a big headed guy who does'nt want to listen to others, doest respect others views or does nt want to learn from others.may be he will learn from a foreigner but not from a sri lankan)

I dont need to answer your question because you know the answer. If you have heard of any reputed Sri Lankan he has come out from the public education system, including all our Pri ministers and presidents and from Jayantha Dhanapala to Dr Gamini Corea and Susanthika,Arjuna,Sanath,Arvinda and many tens or thousands people are there. They dont need to go to a particular university but the reputaion they have gained in the civil society is a proof that our education system and schools can produce great people.
