Nothing wrong studying at good universities. However all those good universities abroad have loads of Sri Lanka students who have never been to an 'international school'. Same time, staff of the Sri Lankan Universities are also have their postgraduate qualifications from well recognized foreign Universities. Please try to appriciate their dedication (teaching in local Universities for pittence). Sri Lanka is still alive because of those people. Ther have seen the 'world' and came back to serve their motherland.

Learn to apologize for the wrong remarks you made without reading my post. Perhaps CIS won't teach you that.
Thanks

Pera,
I didn?t say that universities abroad don?t have students from other schools. I merely said that there is no harm in going abroad to study in answer to your comment ?trying to get prepared for your future abroad? Maybe you need a memory pill to remember what you state and keep forgetting! I never said I don?t appreciate Sri Lankan university staff. However since you outlined so many bad things about International schools I stated those negative facts that you missed to state about local schools and universities.

You cannot demand apologies when you do not deserve any. You learn to apologize for starting off slandering CIS students out of the blue. You get respect when you give respect. Basics of good manners.

In reply to Muniraj?s earlier reply to me, I wasn?t telling you about the Sri Lankan club culture, I was just saying its normal for people to go to 2-3 clubs in a single night there is nothing unusual about that, like someone else pointed out its called ?club crawling?.. and as for the ?culture shock ?comment I didn?t say that people who went to private/public schools cant overcome cultural barriers in other countries, I was just saying that going to an international school prepares you better.
I?ve seen the ?exceptionally rural students? you are talking about and some of them have a pretty rough time when they first arrive at overseas universities. Its not just about studying and getting through the university course, there are other social issues to consider, which these students struggle with.
As for the comment that Dumidak made to Anonymous about having the same mindset of the ?killer boy? just because they went to same school, that has to be the most hilarious/ idiotic comment I have seen in this discussion so far?even people who don?t agree with my other views have to agree on that one!!...c?mon!!
And Pera, the CIS basher, just like a few others in this discussion, seems to resent students from CIS ( and other schools like it) and looking at the comments that he/she made I can only put it down to jealousy?you people have finally got an opportunity to vent out all your frustration... go for it!.. I?m sure most of the ?basher?s in this discussion wouldn?t have minded the opportunity to be a student at CIS if they were ever given the chance. ..And no?. before you jump to any conclusions I am NOT saying that all other schools are crap?and its extremely small minded of you Pera to look down on people who do Odd jobs?, there is nothing wrong with that. Are you so high and mighty that doing odd jobs is beneath you?...At least the CIS students you are referring to are humble enough to do odd jobs, let me guess you?d rather die than ever have to do an odd job..oh the shame!..... And all that crap about bleaching the skin with fair and lovely....WHAT THE???..thats just weird.

Factsright & Pissedoff,

It seems that you guys need some detail explanation on the subject...let me explain in point form...
-What are you guys always talking about the CIS...we talked about the general int'l education culture as a whole...I see it as another kind of heroin that the kids have adopted.

-Its true that Thomians and Peterrites..etc...are clubbing like nothing...thats what i was referring to in my previous post...and thats what i m worried about...thats what i was referring about the cultures getting mixed...just about 10 yrs back when we were schooling...it was not like this...but we still enjoyed up to the maximum...I accept that things are changing but this change is not acceptable at all...I met a senior staff member of one of the schools that you've mentioned earlier...he was commenting on the behavior of the current students...and how they are misbehaved...

-you might not willing to accept this...but the fact is that most of the parents put their kids to these int'l schools, cos they fail to get a proper govt or private school for their kids (due to the severe competition for local schools)...

-You were saying that CIS students are in top uni s in the world...who cares guys...Understand this...educational institutes are where an individuals build their intellectual, behavioral and attitudinal elements...so we have to see the characteristics of the person who comes out of that particular institute...even in the best unis, there are many who comes out without much of a change in both the attitudinal and intellectual sense...

Just FYI...if you check the world's top class institutes like NASA, HARVARD, STANFORD ...in all these there are many lecturers and engineers who are Sri Lankans...out of these, about 99% of them have taken either a basic or higher education from local schools and local unis...

-FACTSRIGHT ...you seems to be deviating from you user name to a greater degree...tell me buddy what do you know about the ragging of Colombo uni...I can bet you on that ...cos Science faculty of Uni of Colombo is the only faculty in SL to be free from ragging...i can responsibly say that...and even in other faculties of Uni of Colombo there s very much less ragging...so please get your FACTSRIGHT before commenting on those...

-PISSEDOFF...man you are on the other extreme of FACTSRIGHT...cos you seem to live up to your name...cheers for that...you said we are jealous of int'l college students...bit mistaken buddy ...actually we really sympathies for those kids in each and every time i see those kids in my visits to SL...and you were claiming that how developed the sri lanka is...that alone shows your view point...you guys are just like frogs in a well...
pissedoff i m so sorry to say this ...it s nothing personal...but i think most of the individuals who got themselves int'l school education are totally in a dream world of their own...we see utter selfishness among them...for eg:when the Katunayake air port was bombed(was a friday)...the next day all the night clubs were jamed packed according to the reliable news i got...so you were saying that you are holding in to your roots...so as a true Sri lankan i m suggesting you is, for the betterment of SL as well as for your own, please do not hang on to your roots...cos you guys are a curse for our mother land?

please don?t get annoyed over the last comment of mine?its just the way I see it?I may not have a right to say it?but I think you deserve it?

Look if you go to a local school and do well or if you go to an international school and do well - the good comes to sri lanka right? so whats the difference. quit hating on each other. We should have a strong national identity as Sri lankans. Already we divide ourselves according to race, religion etc. and now its about where we went to school. please whats next? whether you wear bata or DSI slippers?

If we keep up this self righteous arguements the only loser will be our country.

If people study abroad and get the best the west has to offer and bring it back to enrich our country then they should be congratulated. We have good local schools and universities here too and they can only gain by learning about what is successful in other countries for example - Singapore and Malaysia not just the West.

If you guys have a problem with international schools then you have to deal with it. Dont send your kids there. Simple. But dont hate on the benefits of an englih education. Like it or not we HAVE to encourage our kids to learn english properly. Look at how well India are doing with setting up their call centres and actually taking jobs AWAY from the UK and the US. Thats because they held on to the english language.

The worst crime that was committed against sri lankans was when the SWRD's government took away that option with the sinhala only policy. They did it to win votes in the short term but in the long term the youth of sri lanka were the losers.

you cant deny that whilst a minority attend international schools in colombo they have mushroomed up and down the country. and the demand for english tuition is extremely high.

Parents did not send their kids to international schools because they couldnt get into local schools. THey sent them there to give them the extra option - the leg-up that an english education would give them

Dear Readers,
I have briefly scanned through all your responses to this tragic article and get the general impression of a to-and-fro battle over who to blame.
Yvonne did nothing wrong. Sharmantha murdered her.
What i beg you all to appreciate that this young woman, regardless of under what circumstances she perished in, is indeed dead.
And the replies on this web site are truly heart breaking, that you see the death of a beautiful young woman as grounds for ranting about western culture and blaming her mother for not raising her right. How dare you!
The fact of the matter is YOU DID NOT KNOW HER.
Please have some sympathy for those who will always know and grieve over her death, which has affected hundreds of people world wide. America, Ireland, Switzerland, Australia, Sri Lanka and many more.
Im sorry for you all that you never got to meet her, for a more caring, sweet, unselfish and vibrant person i have yet to come accross.
Yvonne was a girl we all treasured as a friend, and we miss her dearly.

Yjo, may your beautiful soul shine on in heaven, and may these ignorant members of society tarnish your unblemished much respected reputation no more.

Rayray,

100% agreed buddy...my previous mail may have hit many individuals...but i specifically said 'most of those who were studied in int'l schools'...it does not imply all...but surely some...

though i m from the colombo area it self...some behaviors of the city just freaks me out...i mean in some places(like millenium city..etc..etc...)its just like they have born in the moon...and now they act like they are in mars...
in the tsunami...i went to Sri Lanka immediatly after it ...i was really pleased to see some students from a int'l school came to rupavahini to help to help with the distribution of food stuff...and i have extremely close friends from int'l schools...i m not against the int'l schools at all...but there are many who s behavior is not accepted ta all in the cultural dimention...

The question here is not that International schools are better or worse but how we can protect our children from this kind of death traps.

What my sugestions are

1. parents should spend more time with their teenage children. Because teenage is the most dangerous period of a person and what he does in the rest of his life is determined in what he doen in teenage.

2.We should teach our girls tehchinqes of self defence and fitness. Mostly girls want to get trimmed and they are more worried about figure. But at the same time they should improve the physical fittness as well. In a life saving situation like this, a man can easyly overpower a woman and do whatever he want. If the woman is phycially fit she can fight back or at least run away from him. Here the girl was runnig away from him and he was chasing. He caught her in the 20 floor. may be if she ran coulple of floors more she could have saved her life.
