Tigers get millions from Norway - Leading Norwegian Newspaper reveals
Wednesday, 6 July 2005 - 1:52 AM SL Time

A Leading Norwegian Newspaper, the Aftenposten, has reported that while Norway mediates in Sri Lanka`s conflict, Tamils in Norway send millions of Kroners to the LTTE`s armed forces and the police.

Quoting the Norwegian News Agency (NTB), the report says that many Tamils have been threatened to contribute and the money collection, which is carried out on a monthly basis, has been reduced to a system among Tamils all over the country.

It was only last week that Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar told the Norwegians that the movement for democracy in certain districts in the north and east must begin to roll and if the government of Norway is unable to plead this cause with the conviction and determination that it deserves it should stand aside and yield to other parties who could carry the flag of democracy into areas where darkness presently prevails

Amnesty International urges President not to resume executions
Tuesday, 5 July 2005 - 10:30 PM SL Time

Amnesty International is gravely concerned at reports that the Justice Ministry and the Attorney General have recommended that the death sentences imposed on the killers of Rita John be carried out.
Amnesty International recognises that the rape and murder of Rita John was a horrific crime and that those responsible must be punished. However, no matter how terrible the crime, as a violation of the right life and the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, the death penalty can never be justified.

Amnesty International therefore urges the President to reject the recommendations of the Justice Ministry and the Attorney General and to stand firm in maintaining the moratorium on executions.

The implementation of the death penalty in this case would be a retrograde step, which would end a 29 year moratorium on executions and reverse the significant progress Sri Lanka has made in protecting and promoting human rights. Moreover, in past decades Sri Lanka has been one of the Asian countries that has set an example in the region by rejecting the death penalty and the reactivation proposed by the Justice Ministry and Attorney General would break with that tradition, as well as with the international trend towards abolition of the death penalty.

Nearly 3,500 Lankans have AIDS - ILO
Tuesday, 5 July 2005 - 1:47 AM SL Time

The number of HIV/AIDS cases reported from Sri Lanka, by the end of 2004, was around 614. The International Labour Organisation said yesterday that the numbers could increase as these were only the official numbers.

However, persons with the disease were reluctant to come forward due to the immense changes that take place in ones appearance and the social stigma associated with it.

According to ILO and UNAIDS reports, the estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDs in Sri Lanka is around 3,500, ILO sources said yesterday. A majority of them belong to the productive section in society, such as drivers, those in the hotel trade, the army, teachers and artists. A majority of them are within the age of 30 - 39, they said.

`Even though Sri Lanka is one of the South Asian countries in which HIV/AIDS has not posed such a threat the possibilities of the disease spreading are much higher. The reluctance to use condoms, the large number of commercial sex workers and external and internal migration are only some of the reasons, the ILO said.

Five sentenced to death for killing Sri Lankan judge
Monday, 4 July 2005 - 10:09 PM SL Time
A Sri Lankan court sentenced five suspected drug traffickers to death on Monday for their involvement in the fatal shooting of a High Court judge who was known for handing out heavy punishments to narcotics smugglers.
Delivering the verdict to a packed courthouse, a three-member High Court panel convicted Nishantha Udayakumara, Thushara Abeywickrema, A.S. Rupasinghe and Sumedha Niroshan of conspiring to murder, and of murdering Sarath Ambepitiya last year.

The fifth defendant and accused ringleader, Mohammed Niyaz Naufer, was convicted of conspiring to murder and of aiding and abetting the killing. The prosecution said he ordered the killing but wasn`t present when it was carried out.

It took Senior Judge Upali Abeyratne six hours to read the 248-page judgment, which was reached after a 25-day trial. He said there was substantial evidence against the defendants, who were allegedly involved in narcotics trafficking.

Lloyds remove Lanka from War risks listing
Monday, 4 July 2005 - 3:05 AM SL Time

The Lloyds Market Association has informed the Sri Lanka High Commission in the UK that their Joint War Committee has removed Sri Lanka from its listing in respect of Hull War Risks and related perils with effect from 20th June 2005. This decision elevates the status of Sri Lanka as a safe destination for foreign vessels and lowers the vessel operating costs incurred by ship owners, Ministry of Ports and Aviation said.

The de-listing is expected to benefit Sri Lanka`s Trade through lowering of freight charges for break bulk cargo and charter hire of vessels calling Colombo. A more marginally beneficial effect is expected in respect of container freight rates on liner terms.

Although, the `Held Cover` status on Marine Cargo Insurance to Colombo remains unchanged, the removal of the Hull War Risk will have a positive effect towards early removal of Held Cover Status, in recognition of the normalcy prevailing with regards to cargo security in the country at present, a ministry spokesman said.

Needed: Speedy trials
Wednesday, 6 July 2005 - 1:57 AM SL Time

All five accused in the Judge Sarath Ambepitiya assassination case have been sentenced to death. However, it is doubtful whether their punishment will be carried out, as the President is averse to hangings, though everything is in place for judicial executions. In any case, an appeal is likely against the HC judgment.

Mr. Ambepitiya was an illustrious judge who believed in deterrent punishment by way of helping rid the country of crime. Even the toughest criminals brought before this upright judge, it is said, were shivering in their boots. For, they knew leniency was not known to him as regards the underworld. And he in the end had to pay for his convictions with his dear life. He was the first judge to be felled by criminals.

The killing of a judge of that calibre, an asset to the Sri Lanka judiciary, naturally warrants special investigations and a speedy trial. As much as being one way of honouring a fallen judge, swift dispensation of justice is also an effective method of battling crime, which has sadly been neglected in this country much to the consternation of the public, who have been condemned to a life of eternal fear of criminals.

Post P-Toms celebration
Wednesday, 6 July 2005 - 1:53 AM SL Time

If Pirapakaran had a meeting in the a jungle clearing off Theravikulam, with the LTTE pistol gangs to celebrate the successful execution of the gruesome assassination tasks allotted to them after the CFA was signed, he would have among many goodies on the menu, Reindeer sausages and Norwegian Smoked Salmon sandwiches. The latter recently donated by the visiting Norwegian VIPs.

While the treat was being gobbled up, here is the possible text of the celebratory speech, The Thallaivar, Pirapakaran would have made to the exultant cheering of the LTTE cadres.

`I congratulate all of you for your excellent work done for the sake of Tiger Eelam. Today we have achieved Tiger Eelam by artfully deceiving-the Sinhala politician-modayas in the south. The P-Toms is simply an interim surrender document giving us the legitimacy to intervene in the affairs of government, under the guise of tsunami work, anywhere in Illankal. Be patient, I shall explain`.

This land belongs to Mafiosi?
Tuesday, 5 July 2005 - 1:49 AM SL Time

The country has come to such a pass that even a block of land cannot be disposed of without criminal outfits being paid protection money. Ill-gotten funds so raised have been the main source of income for many criminals who masquerade as genteel folk hobnobbing with politicians. Affected parties have chosen to remain silent for fear of their lives. Who in his proper senses will want his entire family wiped out' Besides strong arm tactics, criminals have taken to forgery to grab others` land and they have gone to the extent of tampering with even original documents in land registries, with the help of venal pettifoggers and officials. These rackets have been going on for a long time and the worst part is that most victims are unaware that their lands have been grabbed until the `new owners` visit their properties. Then, it is too late.

They also showed photographs of the cricketer with a protective arm around his wife taken during the past week while they were holidaying together in Spain, leading to speculation a reconciliation was on the cards.

However, Simone Warne made clear the announcement of the separation made nine days ago still stands.

`Due to the increased interest and misinformation, I wish to confirm that Shane and I are separating,` Simone said in a statement issued late Sunday to Channel Nine television, which employs her husband.
