The Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition Nimal Siripala de Silva called upon the civil society to act against trade union strikes which badly affected their lives.
`An uprising in the civil society is needed against the trade union actions that hinder the country's progress and the forward march`, he said.
The Minister was addressing a seminar to mark the World TB Day, which falls on March 24th, organised by the Health Education Bureau in Colombo yesterday.
`The public face immense difficulties due to ruthless strikes, especially in the health sector and it is the responsibility of the civil society to defeat these elements. This will also support the government's efforts in developing our country, where trade unions stage protest for everything,` he said.
Policy changes are necessary to meet the current challenges and developments, but this is not understood by many of the trade unions, he added.
A proper programme, coordination and implementation should be in place to ensure a better health service, he said.
`Many involved in this field want to go to Japan and once they return they are reluctant or fail to apply Japanese standards and systems to our procedures making their foreign trip a waste`, he said.
`We should express our gratitude to those who are committed to uplift the health care sector, while condemning the forces that obstruct the country's development`, he added.
