The European Union is granting Rs. 1.7 Billion (Euros 13.15 Million) for the rehabilitation of 250 kilometres of Class 'C' 'D' and 'E' roads and 300 kilometres of Local Government roads damaged by the conflict in the North and East Districts.
The project will be executed by the ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation and implemented by the North-East Provincial Council through the north-East Community Restoration and Development Project (NECORD). At the National Level, a Project Steering Committee consisting of the relevant Agencies and the Donor will be responsible for policy guidance and coordination between all institutions and groups involved in the project. The Provincial Road Development Department of the North-East Province (RDD) will implement the project.
In addition, the project will focus on capacity-building measures, training needs assessment, human resource strategy development, operational manuals and periodic participatory assessments.
Another important component of the project is the creation of a provincial road maintenance system including a `road maintenance fund`.
A Handing over of the document by the European Union was done by the Charge D' Affaires - European Union. Mr. Wonter Wilton to Mr. M. S. Jayasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation on February 08.
