Lankan News Replies

MEP leader and Minister of Urban Development Authority and Water Supply Dinesh Gunawardena, yesterday urged all governmental agencies, police, local authorities and the general public to cooperate with him in having a `polythene free Colombo city`. He said he hoped to ban the use dumping of polythene from January 1, 2006.

`We have found the main reason why Colombo and its suburbs to go under water. It was due to polythene blocking most drainage systems. I hope to implement this and ban the use of polythene for decorations, funerals, pandals, buntings on the streets of Colombo and the suburbs, under UDA regulations, as it had been found to be the cause of environmental problems in towns and cities. I will get the police and other relevant government agencies to remove any such polythene and prosecute the offenders.`

He said all local authorities of the relevant areas had agreed in principle several months ago to implement this ban on polythene in Colombo and he would continue to ask for their fullest cooperation in carrying out his proposal.

He requested all local authorities to put aside their political loyalties and see that this polythene menace does not cause environmental damage.

Ha ha funny. I am 25 now but I new this from before I was 16 that its the polythene that blocks the waterways. its common sense you fools. its every one's responsiblity to look after the environment not tust the council. people in lanka think that they can vote the people to the council and then expect them to clean up the rubbish. people cant think beyong the four walls around their house. they think they only need to keep the rubbish out of that and throw them in everywhere. I ve seen an old woman dumping all her rubbish into a canal over her wall. I think we need to use our media to educate people not to show god dam 25 hindi films in a week.

Good luck Dinesh. I am glad you realise that we should stop the heavy usage of polythene.

'' We Have found the main reason why colombo and its suburbs to go under water, It was due to polythene blocking most drainage systems''

Very funny minister, even a five year old child can say the reasons for flooding in colombo, infact they can give more reasons for flooding such as poor planning, poor building constructions, etc.

Banning polythene isn't a big deal, if you really want to do that why wait until next year? My point is you should justeducate our people about the environment and the hazard of polythene , and try to bring some environmental friendly bags instead of polythene bags.
