FMM condemns unwarranted detention of Tamil journalist and colleagues
Tuesday, 20 December 2005 - 3:13 AM SL Time

The Free Media Movement (FMM) yesterday condemned the arrest and detention of a senior journalist and two technicians attached to the Thinakkural newspaper. The Free Media Movement condemns the arrest, detention, photographing and filming of senior journalist, P. Parthipan, and two computer technicians, Messrs Kokulan and Sarveswaran of the Tamil language newspaper Thinakkural, by the Kirulapona police in Colombo 05, for over a period of 12-hours in police custody.

They were returning home in the company vehicle after night duty, and were arrested between Wellawatte and Pamankade, by police in a routine search operation around 11.30 p.m. on December 17, 2005. Although Mr Parthipan, an Attorney-at-Law, immediately identified himself as a journalist by producing his media accreditation card of the Government Information Department, in addition to his National Identity Card and newspaper office identity card, police told him that they do not accept media accreditation card. He was not allowed to make a phone call to his newspaper office from his mobile phone and it was taken into police custody.

By 3.00 am Sunday morning, they were taken to another place from Kirulapone Police Station where their fingerprints were taken by a police officer who did not treat them humanely. Thereafter, the Police took photographs of them and videoed them.

They were released on bail at 11.00 am Sunday, December 18, after almost 12-hours. It is clear that the reason for their arrest was that they were Tamils. This is not only regrettable but has to be condemned.

The FMM accepts the police`s right to arrest and question persons on national security grounds but would like to emphasize that basic human rights, including freedom of expression, have to be respected at all times.

The FMM requests that an inquiry be held on this incident and it should be made compulsory for the police that, whoever is arrested under emergency regulations in this manner, should immediately be allowed to notify a person of their own choosing.

All these people depending on dollars from NGOs and they have to make a little noise to receive some money to go have a Kasippu shot in the evening. Did they utter a single word about journalists killed by ALTT?

Anyway if these three guys are innocent, They will be released with out any harm by the Sri Lanka police. Then they also can join FMM to have a Kashta shot.
