3 years ago had an experience when we were in Colombo for a short while.
Coming from the Airport to Colombo we were stopped at the Keleniya check point. They(SLA) started to check our pass ports and started to mumble at each other. The conversation went on like this.
SLA officer A: Are they Tamil?DEMALA AYADA? (our passports held Muslim names, we could easily be passed as Arabs).
Officer B: I really don't know, they don't seem to speak any Sinhalese.(MAMA DANNE NEE, EYALA SINHALA KATHA KARANNE NEHA.)
Right through the conversation while listening to them I pretended, that I could not understand Sinhalese at all. They simply could not figure out who we were. It was such a task for their little brains.
At this point things were really getting on my nerves due to jet lag and being cramped up in a plane for nearly 18 hours.
Finally I went to them and said, KARUNAAKARALA APATA YANNA DENNA. API DEMALA AYA NEMEI MUSLIM AYA. LANKAWATA AWE HADISIYAKATA. (pls let us go, we are not Tamils we are Muslims. We came to Srilanaka for an emergency,)
We were harassed for no apparent reason by these incompetent people failing to identify another race by looking at something as simple as a passport.
I wont be surprised that this case is also a case of misunderstanding by the officers.

I know other case of discrimination like you. I heard that many Tamils are currently stopped at the Airport . The reasons are sometimes just not explainable.
How racists are those guardians ! |

Not only Tamils, everyone has to go through the security checking process when you enter into the BIA. This is common to everyone irrespective of their background or language.
You might have to show your passport and sometime they will check you luggage, vehicle and so forth. That's their duty and you can't rationalize them as racists.
If you go to USA or Europe, you have to go through rigorous security process and not only that you could find some special entrance depending on your skin color and passport. You have to speak English, otherwise need to wait for translator. But, there are Tamils speaking soldiers are working at BIA for your convenience.
SLA/Police would ask you stop your vehicle at any check point due to the security reasons. They are not crystal ball glazer to recognise you without checking you identity. You got to speak, dont pretend you are dump.
