FMM condemns raid on LTTE backed newspaper

The Free Media Movement has been disturbed over the search, by the armed forces, of the editorial and premises of LTTE backed `Eelanaadu`, Tamil newspaper based in Jaffna.
The `Eelanaadu` is one of the four Tamil dailies published in Jaffna. `All four dailies take an editorial line that supports Tamil nationalism, which is the ideological basis of separatist armed struggle in the north and east of Sri Lanka,` the FMM said in a statement yesterday (16)
The FMM says it views the situation as a direct result of the violence in Jaffna during the past few weeks and the search by the military may be a signal that the media is under scrutiny and ` thereby would impede the freedom of expression and information.`
