New Army Commander Sarath Fonseka yesterday called for the immediate resumption of field level talks between the military and the LTTE to defuse tension following the two major attacks ? but he also vowed he would take every step to protect his troops and fight terrorism.
Addressing his first news conference after assuming command, Lt. Gen. Fonseka said he hoped there would be a field level meeting soon involving the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission also.
The new Army Chief said he had long years of experience in battle and was ready to face any terrorist activity.
?I have a lot of battle field experience with the LTTE and they won`t judge me as a weak man. I hope to be a challenge to any terrorist activity in the country. Indeed, I want to be a challenging person for them,? he said.
Lt. Gen. Fonseka said he believed the ceasefire agreement had many loopholes militarily and politically and thus needed to be reviewed immediately.
He said he also believed that the ceasefire agreement had helped the LTTE strengthen itself. But the Army also had obtained new equipment and was ready to face any threat. The Army Commander said he believed that special attention should be paid to the restructuring and the strengthening of the Directorate of the Military Intelligence, which had lost several key officers in recent months.
Admitting there were a large number of corrupt officers in the Army, Lt. Gen. Fonseka said he would insist on a crackdown on corruption.
The Army Commander said that though the LTTE was denying involvement in recent attacks, there was evidence of its involvement.

Now that the man who answered with the language terrorists knew better at the helm things would fall in line. The myth CBK/Ranil and the goons hallucinated the man in the street and gobbled the war chest for mansions in greener climes should be shattered.
You don't have knotty problems when you are not corrupt. With all the corruption the west led by Bush/Blair give them right royal treatment and why should it be different here.
Take a cue and with time and give them the promised land that we have given them for 2500 yrs. Rewrite the history. |

| Yes , this is a good sign. RW wanted to elapse time without taking reasonable action for peace. Now newcomer says that he can take initiative for calm. As for me, he must call some troops back from the residential areas. All the army barriers should be removed from the villagers., Army should leave from occupied houses , schools and public places. Then we can trust him.If there is no army, no landminds, no killings. |

Very very bad developments in the north and east.
i don't know why people push for war. its going to be nightmare after nightmare. i do not wish anyone to live in fear. it is wrong to let the country slide into a war. people who clamored about paramilitaries should realize what a dangerous thing they have done. i suppose there will always be some extremists. |

Yes. Most LTTE supporters here appear to love the blood spilling. Like I said, there are no winners in a Civil war. Suicide bomber might kill dozens, but won't end up a winner. Innocent people die. Some appear to love that idea.

Good work Fony...
I know, you are not a fool like the earlier ones.
You were used to give a good fight when the going got tough.
All the best as SLA chief.
To All the Tamils ( pro-LTTE anti-LTTE or neutral): This man is a good man, who can take decisions and can influence idiotic politicians. Work with him, if you don't want any more killings of Sri Lankan Sons and Daughters. |

| Army chief says he has experience with the LTTE and that the LTTE knows that he is not a weak guy. I suppose even the new army chief with his experience with VP and the LTTE and the many defeats the Army and the other forces have faced at the hands of VP and the LTTE knows that VP and the LTTE are also not weak guys!! |
